Tuxedo Princess, Liverpool: A dodgy nightclub in the North East

by sourbugger

It's a rite of passage A ship moored under the Tyne bridge sounds a little romantic - but forget that, this is Newcastle's nightlife in the raw.For the past 15 years or so it's been a rite of passage for any student in the North East. I havn't been in many a year, but rest assured my sources tell me it hasn't changed a jot in all that time. The revolving dancefloor is still there (apparantly) along with the cheesy DJ's, greasy old blokes, Stag & Hen parties and hoardes of girls wearing little more than a belt, prabaly with the slogan 'slut' or 'up for it' on it.Despite the name I doubt if a Tuxedo has ever been worn by anyone there, and certainly no princess has crossed its gangplank. Don't expect much sophistication, this former ferry is just packed with people just dying to get off with each other. Thus opinion is divided, some see it as a smelly, vomit-inducing vision of hell in search...

The Phil in Liverpool: Very grand pub to visit in a city of culture !

by sourbugger

You may find the Phil is quite Phull.. The 'Phil' as I believe it is usually known is one of the great historic pubs of Liverpool.Wood pannelling, mirrors, marble and various art deco creations abound everywhere.I would say (in my considered opinion) that the gents toilets rank as the highlight of any visit. Don't be shy girls - just explain you're only coming in for a quick look, to look at some magnifcent specimens !John Lennon also commented that the price of fame was not being able to go to the Phil. The place can get very packed at times.

The local pub

by Gili_S

Everyone knows about the pubs, I am not sure if its really matter where you go to, but always the local pub have that same atmosphere, good beer and the steak and kidney pie. It's like you never really been to the England if you haven't visited the local pub.

Ye olde trip to Jerusalem: The oldest pub in England ? Probably

by sourbugger

From Sourbugger's Nottingham page :This pub quite boldly claims to be the oldest boozer in Britain. There are other claimants, but it cannot be denied that people have been getting quitely (or loudly) pissed in this place for hundreds of years before the Black Plague or the discovery of America. The date painted on the walls, that of 1189 A.D, is pretty much a guess - but it is the year of the ascension to the throne of King Richard the First, (the Lionheart). One of Richard's first acts as the new King was to answer the call to crusade against the Saracens who occupied the Holy Land of Christian religion. Since the castle above the inn was a royal stronghold, favoured by the King, the knights and men at arms who answered his call came to the castle, and before their journey to the channel ports, they stopped off for plenty of Dutch Courage at the Inn. The Inn therefore has a great sense...

SAS Radisson at Stansted Airport: Visit the flying wine babe in her tower

by sourbugger

From Sourbugger's Stansted (airport) page :Just 2 minutes from the terminal building is the new Radission hotel, where they have created a kind of up-market food-court in the atrium around a central bar, with one rather special feature. The restaurants themselves consist of NY style steakhouse an Italian and a Spanish Tapas bar. All a very trendy, and whilst not exactly cheap, not a rip-off either. Sample menus can be found below. So, the special feature ? This place is about people watching in the truest sense, well a beautiful individual anyway : the atrium is dominated by a Las-Vegas style 'Wine-tower'.The 13 meter high contraption is loaded with thousands of bottles of wine, encased in a glass shell. When you order a bottle an 'Wine Angel', although I prefer 'Wine Babe', glides up on a system of acrobatic pullies to retireve your desired bottle. The apparatus was originally developed...

Pubs in General: Pubs and Beer

by sabsi

Whereever you are in England there's always a nice pub to go to for dinner and a few drinks. Some of them are old and very traditional while some are modern (= the usual tacky video game machines etc). In all of them you get excellent English beers (there are so many different ones, I couldn't believe it) and in a lot of them you will get excellent and "affordable" pub food. I was really shocked when last orders were announced very early though (around 10:30 pm). I'm not used to early nights like that anymore, in Ireland most of the pubs I'd been to had late license. It doesn't matter what you wear in most of the countryside pubs. In some nicer ones you might not get in with Sneakers or Jeans.

WOMAD (World Of Music, Arts And Dance): Party with the whole world

by KennetRose

Ex-punk drummer Thomas Brooman set up the first festival of world music back in the 1980s, in a field in Somerset. It was a financial disaster. Enter former Genesis singer Peter Gabriel, who was so committed to the project that he gave a benefit gig to bail it out. There were rough times ahead and Gabriel came to the rescue more than once, but now WOMAD is not only a financial success but the greatest festival of its kind in the world. It has its permamnent home now beside the Thames in Reading. There are many other WOMADs all around the world now, but this is the original and no doubt the best!See my Reading page for pictures of the 2002 event, and for things to do and see in the town while you're there. The wackier the better!
