If you are visiting Norfolk & wish to witness an auction in a traditional market town, then be sure to attend the Diss Auction Rooms...
A weekly auction is held at the T.W.Gaze premises, every Friday, plus there are specialist additional sales on Saturdays, featuring the likes of rural bygones, or militaria...
No list could ever define just what you might find here for trade, & the chattels up for sale are always of an extraordinary variety, from antique, to modern classic...
There is always a room full of traditional wooden furniture, which if you know what to look for, can provide a traditional farmhouse kitchen table at a bargain price...
0utside is a labyrinth of fascinating items, providing a source of such things as weather vanes & roofing materials from old houses, which will give the correct provenance to such a building, being restored...
There is always an assortment of lawnmowers & gardening tools, but what I love the best are the old cardboard boxes of rather rusty vehicle parts, recovered from some derelict garage somewhere - for your money you also can take home the cobwebs & resident spiders!
Thomas William Gaze established his firm of agricultural valuers & auctioneers in 1857
The company continues in this tradition, but now with much more bredth of market, so that all-comers, rather than just farmers will be interested in what is on sale...
The Diss Auction Rooms have featured on various television shows, such as Bargain Hunt & Flog It, & the faces of some of the staff on site will seem familiar, because they have appeared as valuers on these series...
I think all ages will enjoy visiting on auction day, because there is such a vast array of stuff to observe, & I know that many children will be fascinated by the field of tractors & field implements up for auction...
All sorts of folks attend this auction, from toffs looking for a unique antique, to those such as me, who might be accused of lowering the tone of the venue, wearing tractor drivers overalls, but then the history of this site, is primarily agricultural...
You can also play, 'spot the local Lovejoy' (see separate 'Suffolk' tip...)
0f course, you do not actually have to buy anything - Diss Auction Rooms are a great day out - you will see things you never knew existed, & it is a great place for people watching...
So, if you are from abroad & wish to learn about English folk & our traditions, put the venue on your itinerary...

The auction room... You could live in it! Stuffed Curlew! Motoring memorabilia... Fancy a henhouse?
