Sheringham Things to Do

  • StuartSage's Profile Photo

This picturesque railway is run completely by volunteers and by donations from the public. It's a lovely ride from Sheringham to Holt where you can get a horse and cart into the centre of the town.

It features in a classic episode of Dad's Army too, so it's got to be worth a visit on that basis alone!

    Don't Panic, Don't Panic.....!!!!

For spectacular views of the Norfolk Coast and Sheringham Park, walk past the Hall and climb the steps to the gazebo. The gazebo was opened in 1988 by the Prince of Wales.

Sheringham is the final stop on The Bittern Line, originally opened in 1874, but the additional line to the coast, via cromer, was not completed until several years later...
After a long period of disuse, Sheringham was reinstated as a station on this stretch of the North Norfolk Railway, known as The Poppy Line, on 11th march 2010
This involved opening a new level crossing, & relaying of the existing track...
Even if you are not a rail enthusiast, Sheringham station is a must visit, because it is like a trip back in time, to when English railway stations were quaint places, as they were in the 1950's...
The redbrick station building is well-maintained, with gold & green paintwork, & colourful potplants lining the platforms...
There is a static display on a disused track, of a 1950's period carriage, wagon, & a steam locomotive...
A dozen visits per year are now usual for charter trains & visiting rolling stock, including steam days...

Sheringham Carnival is an annual event which occurs in the first week of August, & sees the entire town erupt in a colourful celebration, of, hopefully, sunny holiday weather...
All sorts of floats represent different sections of the community, including the inevitable marching bands...
