Great Yarmouth Marina

by kevin36

If your thinking of mooring here, think twice it is the fastest flowing part of the Broads, being close to the Sea and is tidal. The tidal current here can be very very strong and unforgiving. i would not even attempt to moor here without life jackets on at all times.there are two bridges to contend with so make sure you know the height of the vessel your driving.Boats do get stuck under the bridge, but as long as you don't panic you should be ok,just wait for the tide to turn and go down,if you think you may in danger call the coastguard on 999,but don't abandon your boat. go further up stream where its not so tidal ,towards wroxham and horning.its a lot safer then get a train to Gt yarmouth from Wroxham its not too far. You will enjoy Gt Yarmouth its a fun place to go for the day,its just the moorings.you really need to be experienced to be able to get out of trouble here, this is only...

Fish & Chips

Typically British seaside fayre! Every bit as good as it looks too! Add mushy peas and sauces as required. Find a local restaurant that specialises in this 'delicacy' (you will smell where they are!) - the busier the better! Then sit down and enjoy a huge portion at your leisure! Well that's the posh way - alternatively you must take your newspaper wrapped hot parcel (probably not so easily found nowadays as commercially produced paper is more acceptable) to the nearest bench or beach and enjoy 'al fresco!' whatever the weather!Don't forget to ask for loads of unhealthy salt and vinegar for maximum enjoyment!! There really is no alternative!!

British Rail .... or is it Snail ?

by Alice-Kees

We feel the British Railway system is not a good example of how to run a transport company. Trains are late or don't show up at all. Compared to the price you pay for a ordinary ticket the performance is quite bad. It took us 90 minutes both ways to cover a distance on a direct train that we otherwise by car would have done in not more than 30 minutes...But why criticize another country's railways when our own system isn't any better? (See our Haarlem section) When using the British Railways anticipate to wait and take something to read while you're waiting. The alternative would be walking of course! There's an excellent network of public footpaths in this country, why not take advantage of this and put yourself back in time for a couple of centuries. There used to be times that people did not know of trains. Walking is free of charge; all you need is a good pair of boots and a...
