The Atlas Fountain is my favorite feature of the formal gardens at Castle Howard. It dates from the middle of the 19th century, and is the work of sculptor John Thomas. It was part of an expensive and far-reaching scheme of landscape design created by William Andrews Nesfield for the 7th Earl of Carlisle in the 1850s. He ended up spending close to 10,000 pounds for Nesfield's plans - the equivalent of millions in today's currency.

    The Obelisk

    a faithful pillar

The Obelisk was the first major "monument" in Castle Howard to be raised, in 1714-15. It follows the neo-classical urge to create memorial pillars in the Roman style. It stands in the center of the main drive leading up to the Castle's grounds.

There are two inscriptions on the Obelisk. One is in Latin, and commemorates the recent victories of the Duke of Marlborough in the War of the Spanish Succession. The other is in English, and is a statement of pride by the man responsible for the building of the castle, Charles Howard, the 3rd Earl of Carlisle. An excerpt:

If to perfection these plantations rise
If they agreeably my heirs surprise
This faithful pillar will their age declare
As long as time these characters shall spare
Here then with kind remembrance read his name
Who for posterity perform'd the same
Charles the III Earl of Carlisle. . .

The Temple of the Four Winds was one of my favorite attractions on the grounds of Castle Howard. It's a kind of "folly" that the 3rd Earl of Carlisle asked his architect Vanbrugh to design for him - I guess for picnics, or just as a place to "get away from it all."

I just love this, the broadest of the Yorkshire Dales with its sweeping vistas and farms dotting the landscape. It is the Yorkshire of my dreams and I keep coming back.

My favourite Swaledale village, tiny Gunnerside has spectacular views of the surrounding fells and into the rest of the dale. On top of that, one of my favourite Yorkshire village pubs where sheep come past on the main road. Heaven!
