Heartbeat....
  • Tip Rating:
  • Heartbeat is a popular British tv series, set in the 1960's in the beautiful Yorkshire countryside.

In the programme the village is called Adensfield but in reality it is a village called Goathland where most of the outdoor scenes are filmed.

It centres around the local bobbies (policemen), the pub, and the village store.

People visiting the village when filming is going on, can even be asked to be 'extra's'.

The programme is so popular it has been sold to over 35 countries!

Parking can be a bit of a problem, with lots of tourists visiting. There is a car park (fee payable) opposite the shops.

Next to the Heartbeat museum is quite a large grassed area, and when we visited lots of cars were parked there.

    Heartbeat Museum...
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the central characters in Heartbeat was a person called Greengrass.

He was a bit of a scruffy individual always had an eye for the main chance, but I suppose I could best describe him as a lovable rogue.

He unfortunately became quite ill and no longer in the series.

However these are the clothes he always wore, on display in the museum.

The Heartbeat Museum is situated next to the village church.

    It is open daily: 10.30am - 5.30pm
    Easter to October
    Full Price - £4.00
    Concessions - £2.50

There are special family and group rates.
Dogs who are well bahaved are welcome and are free.

When we visited there was some construction work underway and we were therefore only charged 1/2 price. All I can say is 'thank goodness'!!! I actually thought it was pretty much a waste of money. Other than a couple of rooms, which you can see in my photographs, that was it.

I am not sure what the building work being done entails but I hope that when it is finished there is more to see.

    Goathland Train Station...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The North Yorkshire Moors Railway which is a very popular steam train ride runs through Goathland.

Most of the station and buildings are authentic.

There are up to 8 trains a day and passengers are able to get off at various stations along the route.

Goathland, because of the tv series is obviously a very popular choice.

    Adult price tickets are £8.90

Also this station is used in the Harry Potter films but called Hogsmead!

    Goathland or Hogwarts Station
  • Tip Rating:
  • Goathland is a very picturesque village in North Yorkshire. Its train station is part of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and was used as the station of the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter films.I'm not sure if they also used the actual train, but the steamtrain in Goathland looks a lot like the Hogwarts Express. I dug out the video at home after my trip and watched it again, this time concentrating on the landscape you see through the windows of the train.
For Harry Potter fans or railway enthusiasts it's a nice place to visit.

The Aidensfield Arms / Goathland Hotel
  • Tip Rating:
  • The village pub is the Aidensfield Arms in Heartbeat. Its a good pub and well worth a visit.
The bar meals are particularly good - I had a giant Yorkshire pudding with lots of gravy and three pork sausages for £5 ( late 2007) and it was served quickly after ordering and was piping hot.

Here is a little advance piece of gossip for the next 2006 series of Heartbeat! The doctors house ( shown below) becomes the new police station in the next series.

    Heartbeat Museum.....
  • Tip Rating:
  • This motorcycle from the 1960's is also displayed in the museum.

I presume at some time it must have been used in the series.

    Heartbeat scenes
All over Goathland you see signs of its TV fame. This is Mostyn's Garage and yes, it's known as that these days. Just like the post office and the village shop are both Aidensfield businesses rather than Goathland's these days.
