Bring Good Walking Shoes

by yooperprof

Plan on bringing comfortable walking shoes for a day at Castle Howard. And if it's rained recently, be prepared for sloppy conditions. While the house itself is fascinated, you really don't get the full experience unless you walk over the grounds. And that involves a good deal of walking - sometimes on the grass, sometime on wet pathways.

Nothing posh - unless you're staying in a swept up hotel that is Layers....and waterproofs.Like anywhere in this country you can get any sort of weather and you need to be prepared. Always take water/windproofs when walking on the moors or coast. Sensible shoes are a must.Generally the style is relaxed. Everything is available locally. In the summer if you are by water it will be a good idea to use an insect repellent. Of course, loads of opportunities for spectacular photographs. You have the beach, the moors and the hills and some rather nice towns too so you should consider what you're likely to do and bring the equipment you'll need. Don't overdo it though, most stuff can be hired, including bikes. If you're hiking you'll need the OS maps for the area, binoculars to enjoy the views and the wildlife and a backpack to hold your water, lunch and various additional items of clothing.

The North Yorkshire Moors is a great place to walk around, just make sure you wear comfortable shoes and take an umbrella, just in case. Bottle of water for all that walking!
