  • The Oldest Sweet Shop in England: Fun Fun Fun

    by splash12 Written Mar 7, 2013

The sweet shop is crammed full of sweets from my childhood! There must be hundreds of jars on the shelves with some of my favs - Kola Cubes, Sherbet Lemons, bon bons!

The retro sweets are weighed from the jar into real Avery scales by the quarter. It brought back so many memories of being a child spending my pocket money in our local sweet shop.

The staff were friendly and helpful. They knew a lot about their sweets and the history of the shop.

What to buy: My husband bought some truffles from the chocolate cabinet which he really enjoyed

What to pay: £4-5 altogether. (£1 a quarter)

  • Oldest Sweet Shop: Oldest Sweet Shop in England - Appalling

by simeand Updated Aug 26, 2012

There is nothing makes this visit special. Appalled, disappointed, hurt and upset is how I was left feeling after a visit to the Oldest Sweet Shop in England…..
I visited the shop with my 3 well behaved children of 8yrs, 4yrs & 3yrs all very eager to find a special treat from the special sweet shop BUT after about 60 seconds that excitement came to a very abrupt end after my 3yr old touched a covered item twice and was yelled at by the owner “hey third time and you are out!!!! We don’t want badly behaved children in here ”. So shocked was another customer who said he was leaving after witnessing such awful behaviour and it was at this point that the shop owner told the chap using very bad language we don’t want your business!
All of this witnessed by not only my three children but those of others too.
Completely dissatisfied customer who would not recommend anyone to enter into this establishment

What to buy: Pateley Bridge is a beautiful place however left disappointed by this retailer

What to pay: I didn't spend anything in the shop

The oldest sweet shop in England is a very good reason for visiting Pateley Bridge. A wonderful little shop full of jars and boxes of sweets old and new and many old childhood favourites that are hard to find. There is an antique shop feel to the shop and its cash only in the shop too (although you can buy on line with a payment card). If you are not local sweets can be dispatched to your home anywhere in the world.
Friendly and informative staff who clearly like their work (but who wouldn't working here!).

What to pay: Not too expensive despite the speciality - you could just order 2oz of lots of sweets and not spend too much. Otherwise it would be easy to get carried away!
