Reeth Things to Do

  • Swing Bridge

If you walk along the Swale at Reeth, you will come across the little footpath suspension bridge which locally is just known as the Swing bridge. Yes, it does move a little when you walk across it, and it reminds me of similar bridges between islands in my childhood archipelago. Its creation in 1920 greatly helped walkers crossing the river to walk...

  • Congregational Chapel

Not being involved, I find it hard to describe congregational beliefs but basically, they run their own business rather than belong to the more mainstream churches. Amongst congregationalists in history, you find the Pilgrims who emigrated to America for instance. In the UK, many have now formed the United Reformed Church since joining the...

  • Arkengarthdale

Arkengarthdale is a smaller and more desolate dale which enters Swaledale here at Reeth along with its river Arkle entering the Swale. It is the place to go to escape the worst crowds (no public transport) in high season although real Herriot fanatics will still come since it has been used in the "All Creatures..." TV series. Here you definately...

  • Village pubs

I really couldn't tell you which pub is the best. There are at least three pubs around Reeth village green so just take your pick. The 17th century Black Bull with its up side down pub sign draws the crowds (it was supposedly put like that by mistake but it was allowed to stay like it and has become a signature of sorts) with its free house...

  • Dales Ice cream

Straight from Brymor Ice Cream parlour near Jervaulx Abbey and Wensleydale, this is as local an ice cream as you will have in the Dales and very nice it is too. I am in love with the rhubarb crumble but there are loads of other flavours.

Reeth is full of craft shops, especially in the Dales Craft Centre, five minutes walk from the Green. The website below gives you an idea what some of them are up to such as Stef's Models, making very realistic models of animals, or Ian Whitworth's clocks. My own favourite is this art gallery with animals in iron - I loved the bats to hang on the door and could easily have walked off with lots of others had they not been too big to get back to Sweden.

Reeth Local Customs

  • Wesleyan Chapel

Like most Yorkshire villages, Reeth has a methodist chapel. It is just off the Green and was built in 1796.

  • Lead mining

In the background in this picture, you can see Fremington Edge, the horseshoe formed and very steep cliff overlooking Reeth. This was formed when the latest ice age stopped and as the ice retreated, it brought big chunks of rock with it, leaving only the strongest bit standing. Framington Edge is full of old lead mines and a walk here should be...

There is a risk that you will get increasingly frustrated with the fact that the lovely and vast village green is used as a car park, making any attempt at taking photos awkward as you get cars in the way all the time :(

Reeth Sports & Outdoors

  • Riding in the Dales

Having been with friends and family who don't like horses, I've never tried it, but Swaledale has several stables and the one most known and closest to Reeth is probably the Arkle Moor Riding Centre, just outside Langthwaite in Arkengarthdale.

  • Hiking

Reeth is along the famous Coast to Coast Walk which you can read much more about in the webpages below. This means that lots of B&Bs and hotels cater for walkers with special services such as luggage transport, storage rooms and other things that walkers might need. To do this walk in all its lenght, you need at least two weeks, but around Reeth...

  • Best view playground?

I personally do not know any playground with a better view! It is a joy to go here with your child and look at the fells and dales views all around you, talk to the cattle in the field beside you and listen to the sheep. Bliss :) It is just along the footpath towards Gunnerside, next to the doctor's surgery which is probably a genial idea.

  • Reeth Green

The Green is vast as far as English village greens go, and despite being spoilt by cars, it is a lovely place to stop in just to be somewhere completely surrounded by hills and yet feeling so spacious. An odd combination for the senses to tackle. Whilst you're doing it, there are lots of places for you to sit down in and enjoy a snack or something...
