IF YOU WANT TO TASTE PROPER FISH AND CHIPS GO INTO ANY FISH AND CHIP SHOP IN YORKSHIRE, PARTICULARLY THE ONES IN NORTH YORKSHIRE IN THE SCARBOROUGH/ WHITBY/PICKERING AREA. FISH AND CHIPS ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD ARE A PALE IMITATION
MY FAVOURITE DISH WHICH BRINGS BACK VERY FOND MEMORIES FROM MY CHILDHOOD IS -A BAG OF "SCRAPS" LIBERALLY SEASONED WITH SALT AND VINEGAR. "SCRAPS" ARE PIECES OF BATTER THAT HAVE FALLEN OFF THE FISH WHILE FRYING, THEY ARE GIVEN FREE IF YOU BUY FISH AND CHIPS-ALTHOUGH THESE DAYS YOU CAN NOT GET THEM EVERYWHERE. (MY HUSBAND WHO IS A COCKNEY THINKS THEY ARE DISGUSTING!). BUT IF YOU ARE NOT FRIGHTENED OF CLOGGING YOUR ARTERIES GIVE THEM A TRY. Leave a Comment

by Sjalen Black Sheep is a brewery founded by one of the Theakston brothers in Masham. The Theakston brewery was sold to Newcastle breweries and he could not live with this so he set up his own brewery in the same village. Thus, Black Sheep became the obvious name since he left the family business and on top of that we are in Yorkshire with all its sheep. The beers are all very nice, and found all over the many pubs in Yorkshire, especially in the Dales. You can go on brewery tours both here (see website) and at Theakstons too. I have not done that myself - some say it's too expensive for what it's worth and others love it.
Riggwelter - a strong brew :) Leave a Comment

on board the dining car by DOUGALSMUM For something a bit different try the North Yorkshire Moors Railway"s dining cars and dine out in style. But be warned you must book well in advance- there are only certain dates in the year that the dining cars run and they are very popular.for more details look at www.nymr.co.uk The dining cars are revamped dining cars where you will be served a five course meal in comfort as you are whisked through the yorkshire scenery, the food is excellent (come hungry) the service is exceptional and because its in yorkshire its friendly as well!, dress code is relaxed although most people make an effort. The only gripe is that you have to order your choice from the menu at least two weeks in advance- but if you do what i did and order something different for each guest then you can all try something different.
All the food is excellent- the chocolate profiteroles are the lightest that i have ever tasted! No Queue-but it is 8.30am by DOUGALSMUM Everybody who has visited Whitby has heard of The Magpie Fish Restaurant, and probably seen the queues (there is always a queue a mile long outside), I have passed many times-seen the queue and thought I wouldnt bother-on this occasion I was walking past and there was no queue-I couldnt believe my luck!, I went straight in & was seated right away,It was slightly cramped inside, the tables being pretty close togeather but I suppose that is to be expected of somewhere so popular. The decor was typical seaside fish and chip restaurant, but slightly more upmarket with many interesting old photos of the area on the walls to look at whilst you waited for your food to arrive which is just as well as I had to wait 20 minutes from ordering before my food was served, however it was worth the wait. Something I hadnt realised though was that The Magpie was not just a fish & chippy and that it has an excellent and extensive choice available(mostly fish or fish based of course) and a mouth watering desert menu, unfortunately for me I just didnt have room for a desert though I really would have liked to have one-they all sounded yummy . I staggered out with a full tummy and couldnt believe it-there was a huge queue to get in-boy had I been lucky!! I later found out that you can pre-book, but only on certain days/times and there is only a small amount of pre-books available.
Good old cod and chips with scraps-though every other dish on the menu looked fabulous! Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$21-30 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageDirections: On the harbourside at Whitby just opposite the fish market
