    Whitby Jet

by SallyM Updated Jun 12, 2015

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

What to buy: If you are looking for a local souvenir, a piece of jewellery made from Whitby jet may fit the bill: a typical local product, small, light and easy to pack!

Jet is a fossilized wood, which was used for jewellery making in Roman times. It again became fashionable in Victorian times after Queen Victoria took to wearing jet in remembrance of her husband Albert.

There are many shops in the town selling jet.

    various: TV souvenirs

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Yorkshire being a famous TV location, there are shops in many places selling mugs, stationery, pins, cuddly toys, biography books and much more from the many TV series shot here such as "All Creatures...", "Emmerdale" and "Heartbeat". Amongst more well stocked places is the Yorkshire TV shop in Coppergate in York and a shop along the main street in Whitby's old town but of course the shop in Goathlands is also an obvious Heartbeat place and the Dales are full of Herriot books and films.

What to buy: I am very pleased with my battery driven, whistling cuddly Clanger :)))

    various: Woollen clothes

by Sjalen Written Sep 3, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

In a county with sheep everywhere, woollen clothes are of course an obvious souvenir. Swaledale Woollens (picture) in Muker is a great upmarket alternative but there are lots of bargains to be had in most towns and villages.

What to buy: Sweaters, caps, walkers' socks, vests...
