Mengke's General Tip
Fondest memory: A travelling friend and I headed to York one weekend and we accidently hit upon their Viking festival. Eventually we found dorm accomadation in with two Canadian students, the youth hostel was full, and we hadn't thought it'd be a busy time of year.
It was dark and cold. My friend had never seen snow. It snowed and we walked around town with our mouth wide open, catching the snow! Walking down to the river we caught the fireworks and the viking burial, a small longboat blazing on the river, it's reflection lighting up the sky. The atmosphere was wonderful with Enya playing over loudspeakers, people rugged up against the cold and our breath made visible on the air.
The festival is held on a weekend in February and is well worth seeing. But book accomodation ahead of time!
York Festival Of Traditional Dance
Favorite thing: Each year around the second weekend in September Ebor and Acorn Morris invite traditional dance groups from around the country to dance in York. A procession from the Guidhall and Mansion House starts the day moving down Davygate and ending up in the paved area of Parliament Street. From there the groups disperse to dance at various sites around the centre. There is a grand finale in the afternoon where all the groups dance in Saint Sampsons Square for the Mayor and his party. The festival continues on the Sunday with any groups that do not have to dash off home early. It is a colourful spectacular and worth bringing your camera.
There is usually a backup venue for when it is raining and in the past the festival has moved inside the Guidhall, see photograph number three.
For those that can't make this date the Ebor Morris Men dance in Kings Square most Monday nights from the middle of May to the middle of August.
