When I first laid my eyes upon THE SHAMBLES, I felt like I had been transported back to the Elizabethan period. Here was this incredibly cute, narrow and cobbled medieval street, the oldest street in York. There were picturesque timber-framed buildings - some dating to the 14th century with the oldest being circa 1350.The buildings actually lean into the middle of the cobbled streets, with the roofs almost touching in the middle.
Shambles comes from the Saxon "fleshammels" which means "street of the Butchers" for it was here that the city's butchers' market was located.
Today, the Shambles is one of the UK's most visited, with a wealth of shopping, restaurants and tourist attractions.
Favorite thing: This street is known as The Shambles... I love the way the buildings all fall into the street...I think they were built like this to get the most of the floor space... :) We had a great time looking around here...
