Thwaite is a little cluster of stone houses and farms in the Dales which seem to all huddle together as if in protection (probably against the winter here). The village was founded Norsemen and Thwaite means ' a clearing in woodland'.
There are not so many trees now. The trees were felled to create farmland and never given the opportunity to regenerate.
