    Notes from a small island

Notes from a small island by Bill Bryson tells the story of Bryson's last trip around Britain before moving back to the States after almost 20 years on the British island.
The book is packed with interesting and funny stories about travelling as it really happens. By reading the book you get a nice insight into the life of the British people and their peculiarities. Some places Bryson visits on his trip are: Bradford, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Llandudno, London, Porthmanog and Thurso.
This book is definitely a must-read for everyone before or after a trip to Britain.

    Blurred minster :(

Bring a tripod. I thought my camera was ok to take evening shots without one and on the display the pics looked great. So I took loads of pictures - and they were all more or less blurred.

The skies and the minster would have looked perfect though so if you have a tripod this is the place for you at dusk!

    Rough Guide to Britain

To explore Great Britain an up to date guidebook is very useful. I often use the Rough Guide to Britain (England, Wales, Scotland). It covers information for all budgets on the best places to stay, eat and drink. Plenty of recommendations and practical tips on exploring the countries make this book an useful travel companion.

If you go to York you'll do some serious walking as lots of others do...have a good look at the photo. This street was packed!
Take my advise...I wish I had've!...and pack yourself a comfortable pair of walking shoes.

Bring everything you have got, you are going to need it.
Throw in a duvet as well.

    Yes, for frostbite.

A warm camera helps, it will prevent your finger from freezing onto the shutter button.

Beach gear only if you are STUPID!

A VT meeting in York in January seemed like a good idea at the time.

  • As York is in England waterproofs are a must anytime of the year just in case.

There should be chemists and supermarkets around to buy this kind of thing.

York has some very photogenic areas so plenty of film is a must, but is readily available.

The site of Clifford's Tower was used by the Romans as a cemetery. The bronze and pottery evidence confirms Saxon and Viking occupation. Standing high on its mound, the 11th century Clifford's Tower is the last remaining part of York Castle. In 1068 William the Conqueror built a mound and the round tower, of wood, to establish his control in the North. The castle's most tragic event took place in 1190, when half of the city's Jewish population took refuge from persecution there. They and the then wooden tower were burned. Later, in the 13th century, it was rebuilt in stone by Henry III . The tower, is known as 'Clifford's Tower' because in 1322, Edward II had the rebel Lord Robert Clifford hanged in chains from the walls. It was the central keep of the castle. There were more buildings, surrounded by great walls and then a moat around the whole fortress.

  • We took the trains for three weeks of travel four days here and there. Our American Tourtistor luggage had large 6 inch wheels that were not effected by brick walkways, rail tracks, etc.

    Walking shoes....

My last trip without a digital camera.

We were ready for rain... Had very little.

We used the internet for all our booking of places to stay. Our favorite site had something to do with hound dog???
