    I was surprised!
EVERY DAY THEY HOLD A MARKET IN YORK, and even on a cold and wet day, the Market was being held.

Early morning, and people were setting up in the rain, I really felt sorry for them!
I had a browse around, found stall's selling home-made craft's, quite a few with fresh fruit & vegetable's, and quite a few with clothing.
Not the best on a wet day, but still people were coming and browsing and buying.

There's been a market on this site for hundreds of years and there are over 100 stalls selling a huge variety of things, with a particularly good selection of fresh foods.

The market is open daily from 9am to 4pm and even if you're not buying it's a fascinating place to wander around. It's in a historic part of the city with interesting old buildings and little narrow streets all around.

This will sound stupid, but you can get some good cheses in the market here. It is located just behind the Shables and had existed, not necessarily in this loaction) for over a thousand years. It has an office, website, and even a virtual tour which can be found here:

Having said all that, it is not that great a market. There are some permanent brick buildings in the centre that do have some excellent food stalls, especially cheeses. There is also a lot of cheap clothes and general tat.

It has 110 stalls in the centre of what the City of York describes as ‘Europe's largest single pedestrianised area’. The market is not that big. It lies between the Shambles and Parliament Street and is very easy to access. Have a look around. They do sell great fruit there in the summer, its just that I don’t find it that exciting. In addition to clothes and mobile phone accessories, they sell vegtables, fish, fruit, meat and dried goods.

Closed on Christmas, Boxing Day and New Years Day

    Newgate Street Market

York’s old town has still a market which attracts locals and visitors alike. It has a mixture of more traditional stalls selling fish and vegetables, some food stalls and swell as some with more modern stuff like clothes or cheap electronics. Some of the building in the background might give you an idea how this place looked like in the Middle Ages, however a true medieval feeling never establishes.

This is a fun place to not only shop, but just to hang out, watch the people, and of course shoot photos.
