York Flights

There are sometimes cheap flights to Manchester from other parts of Europe and since its not the closest airport to York, but the easiest to access, it would be a good idea to check it out.
There is a direct train from manchester airport to York so by all means its much easier than going there from London.

Train, car, or intercity bus

York sits astride the main line between London and Scotland, so the train is probably the easiest. Since there is no airport, if you're planning to fly, it's a matter of using either Manchester or Teeside airports.
Walk or use a bicycle. Parking is problematic.

I travelled to York by train, just as an aside for all you people interested about trains - York has the National Railway Museum located right beside the train station.

By Car - We rented a car and drove North from London.

For European visitors, York is only one hour from the P&O/North Sea Ferries terminal at Kingston-upon-Hull with daily sailings to Holland and Belgium.
Getting to York by train is easy and great value too. From London the Journey time is under two hours ; Edinburgh is only two and a half hours from York and there are direct services from Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham and the South West. Rail is a good way to get to York.
Once in York the bus service is good and the taxis are cheap.

There seemed to be several bus systems. I hopped several times, asked questions and was let off a block or so away...gratis;-)

Getting to York by train
York is on the East Coast mainline. It takes less than two hours to get to York from London. Trains go every half an hour with at least 25 direct trains each weekday.
