Caffe Tirreno: Nice for a light meal

Pleasant little place this, with a good choice of pizza, pasta etc.

Good to find somewhere that offers something more than just the bog-standard Anglo-Italian fare.

I enjoyed my roasted vegetable risotto very much, and my 2 glasses of house white wine. The espresso was good as well. For a total of 12.50GBP (2009) this was a good value place to eat, and the food seemed freshly-prepared.

Obviously a popular spot for locals too: plenty of people meeting there after work for a light meal, a coffee, a wine and bruschetta......

It is a cafe, rather than a restaurant, so closes at 9pm (maybe later in summer?).

Young staff were pleasant courteous and efficient.

I enjoyed this place. I'd eat there again.

    Tower Restaurant: Really good food

    Raspberry creme caramel

I stayed here, but I ate here as well.

I'd have eaten here every night, but the full cooked breakfast meant I simply couldn't eat a big meal at night as well!

The evening menu is not large (they serve a range of light meals, panini, soups, sandwiches, cream teas etc during the daytime) but it is really well-cooked and very reasonably-priced.

I had the pork escalope, rolled, with fruit chutney inside and parma ham on the outside, oven-roasted. Served with black pudding mash (delicious), carrots and mange-tout. Beautifully cooked, not over-heavy, vegetables just right.

Followed by raspberry creme caramel, served with proper vanilla ice-cream (home-made?) which was just entirely delicious.

Two glasses of a very pleasant house white wine, and a bill of just over 20GBP made that pretty good value, imo. In the UK you can easily pay twice as much for similar, or worse, food.

You can see the menu and prices on the website.

Definitely worth eating here at least once. Highly recommended.

  • The Lunchbox: Very cheap food and plenty of it!

by nettyfitz Updated Dec 15, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The lunchbox is a cheap and cheerful cafe in the market square in Alnwick. You can eat in for £4.50 or take the food out for £3.00.

There was a choice of about six main courses.

There are also plenty of sandwich options, all at well under £2.00.

We had tea and chocolate cake for 2 and the cost was only £4.00.

    ONLY OPEN DURING THE DAY.

    Staff are very friendly.

Favorite Dish: All the food looked good and very abundant!

Granny's Tea Shop: Just like Granny makes

by SallyM Written Aug 2, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This tea shop is located in a basement, and has a selection of twee accessories to go with its 'granny' theme, including a pair of bloomers hanging from a clothes airer.

There is a good selection of home-made cakes to have with your tea - I had the caramel and hazlenut cake.

Favorite Dish: Caramel and hazlenut cake - a slightly unusual combination, but very good.
