Roman Vindolanda & Roman Army Museum

by WulfstanTraveller Written Nov 2, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum showcase the Roman Wall and Roman military presence on the northern border of their domain in Britain. There is still excavation going on and the sites have substantial information, plus one can see parts of a Roman fort and resconstructed towers, etc.

Eerie stone carvings in the Crypt

by yooperprof Written Feb 20, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Crypt of the Abbey has some interesting throw-offs from the past. For example, there are several artifacts from Roman Britain, including the tombstone of a soldier who was stationed here, and fragments of a Roman temple. There's also this fascinating Saxon-era altarpiece, perhaps from the 8th or 9th century. The carved figures are not at all what you might expect!

Renaissance-era Rood Screen in Hexham Abbey

by yooperprof Updated Feb 20, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

It's unusual to see rood (altar) screen paintings in England. The Puritans did an effective job of destroying most of them in the 17th century. (In some ways, they were England's versions of the Taliban. . . Not all ways, though.) The rood screen at Hexham is very well preserved. Among the subjects depicted here is "The Dance of Death."

    Hexham Abbey

by yooperprof Written Feb 20, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Simon Jenkins gives Hexham Abbey four stars in his extremely useful guidebook, "England's Thousand Best Churches." (I highly recommend it to anyone interested in English church-hopping.) The church is the epitome of the tradition of architecture by accretion: Anglo-Saxon foundations, early medieval staircase, renaissance era rood screen, twentieth century nave. Jenkins writes, "Temple Moore's [20th c.] nave is handsome rather than moving. Beneath it is the old Saxon Crypt, a tunnel-vaulted chamber built partly of Roman Stones with carved ornaments and inscriptions. Its arch reputedly dates from the 7th century. Like all such places, Hexham crypt has a remarkable power of calm." Indeed. The entire church has an unusually powerful effect upon the visitor. You don't need to be religious in order to be moved by the witness of its silent stones.

Hexham Abbey is a lovely old building, with lots of interesting features. It's free to go and have a wander around, or just to sit and enjoy the peace and quiet.
