Barter Books: For all you book lovers!

by clairegeordio

Barter Books, in Alnwick, is one of the world's largest second hand book shops. It is located in part of an old Victorian railway station. As well as books, the shop sells second hand CD's, videos and LP's but only a small selection compared to the large amount of fiction and non-fiction books it sells, of which there are around 350,000.Interesting features of the shop are a large open fire in winter, tea and coffee facilities, a model railway running along the top of some of the shelves, and a children's play area.

Craster kippers.

by leics

Craster kippers are rightly famous. You can visit the shop in the tiny fishing village of Craster. They smoke fish on the premises, and always have a variety of both smoked and unsmoked fish and seafood for sale. Check their opening hours locally using the Tourist Information offices.......they will vary according to the time of year. While you're in Craster, take a walk along the cliffs to Dunstanburgh castle.....well worth seeing. Fish, obviously! Varies according to type of fish and availability.

Continental Market: Alnwick Town

by nickandchris

We just happened to be in Alnwick when a Continental market was taking place. Stalls ranged from natural soaps, sweets, dried and sugared fruits, nuts roasted with different coatings, cheeses, breads, salamis. It was all very colourful and very well patronised, but then it was Easter and a glorious day.We bought a freshly baked baguette (£1 - expensive) and a very small venison sausage which was also £1. The baguettes were being baked on site in a portable oven. Actually, he was quite a miserable man who served us and Nick's efforts in French didn't seem to be appreciated.Samples of food were to be enjoyed so we well and truely "tried" the salami selection. All very nice but outrageously expensive. Supposedly all products are from the country of origin. Buy whatever takes your fancy or your purse allows. It was nice to see different things on offer. A fair bit......

A large array of salamis....
