When I was inside St. Peter's Church I met the verger, who told me this is the oldest church in Nottingham. Apparently, that is debatable, as it is one of three old churches. However, it is undisputedly the oldest building in Nottingham, in continuous use. The first chapel was built here in the late eleventh century to serve the Norman invaders who settled here in what was then the French part of town. In 1140, the church was burnt to the ground and the people seeking sanctuary here were massacred by Empress Matilda's invading army, during the civil war with King Stephen. The church was burnt down twice more, in 1153 and 1174. It was then rebuilt, in the Early English style, by the monks of Lenton. The spire was built in 1340. The church was badly damaged again in 1644 when Parliamentary troops bombarded Royalists who had taken refuge there. Leave a Comment

The Council House, which overlooks Nottingham's Old Market Square, was opened in 1929 by the Prince of Wales. It was designed by Cecil Howitt. In medieval times this was the site of the meat market, known as the Shambles. The city council's offices are here, as well as the Sheriff of Nottingham's. I took a group of Russians to meet him here, and after watching Robin Hood movies, I think they were a bit surprised to find he was black and a nice guy. Leave a Comment

Brew House Yard is at the foot of Castle Rock, next to Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem. In the 13th century it was the site of the watermills for Nottingham Castle. The current building dates back to 1700, when it was a row of houses. Since 1977 it has housed the Museum of Nottingham Life and the entrance to some of the city's caves. Opening times: 10am - 4.30pm Admisssion (with Nottingham Castle): Adults £3, Children, Students & Seniors £1.50 Leave a Comment Address: Castle Boulevard, Nottingham

The Galleries of Justice at Nottingham's National Centre for justice and Law describes itself as "Nottingham's Premier Tourist Attraction." It offers you the opportunity to "travel through three centuries of crime and punishment." I have only walked around the outside and sneaked a quick look inside, as I think that the admission price is too high. Opening times: Tues-Sun 10am-5pm Admission: Adults £7.50, children £5.95 Leave a Comment Address: High Pavement, The Lace Market, NottinghamPhone: 0115 952 0555Website: www.nccl.org.uk

The Ice Arena is fantastic, we went here to see Justin Timberlake on 19th May 2007. It was the most amazing show i have ever been to. He was fantastic live and was one of the most sold out tours of the UK. Justin performed in the middle of the arena, which meant the stage was right in the centre of the floor. This was the first time this set up has been used at the arena creating the ultimate 360 degree viewing experience. Every seat in the house was a great seat giving everyone a fantastic up close and personal view of the man himself. So if your ever in Nottingham and fancy seeing a live show why not give it a visit. Check out the website for the latest tours including Beyonce, Girls Aloud, Diana Ross, CBeebies, Bratz and Dancing on Ice.... there is something suitable for everyone and all ages.

Did you know the world's smallest cinema was in Nottingham? For that Guiness Book of Records experience go and see a film at the Screen Room. Given the (obvious) limited numbers, it is worth reserving tickets in advance. by iwys The original Thurland Hall, which stood on this site, was the home of the richest man in Europe, Thomas Thurland. It was built in 1458, by Thurland, who controlled the fifteenth century European wool trade. Many royal visitors stayed here, including James I and Charles I. Later the hall was owned by the Duke of Newcastle. It was demolished in 1831 and the current building was erected on the site in the early 1900s. It is now used as a pub. Leave a Comment

Most foreign visitors to Nottingham seek out the Robin Hood Statue. When I was there, I got talking to a Japanese tourist. He told me that he was in England for a week and just visiting two places: London and Nottingham. When I asked him, "Why Nottingham?" He pointed to the Robin Hood Statue and said, "Because of him." James Woodford's statue of the legendary outlaw was given to the city of Nottingham by E.F. Clay on June 28, 1949. Unfortunately, as well as tourists, it also attracts graffiti artists. On my last visit, one had disfigured the base. Leave a Comment Directions: The statue stands in front of the walls of Nottingham Castle, just below the main entrance.

St. Mary's Church has the longest history of any church in Nottingham, as there was a church here in the ninth century. The current building is the third on the site, and it was built between 1377 and 1485. Leave a Comment
