Hampshire: Silks for a lady

by TheWanderingCamel

Lovers of fine fabrics, costume drama and industrial history will enjoy a visit to the beautiful old building that houses the Whitchurch Silk Mill. They've been making silk here by the River Test for nearly two hundred years and, even today, are still using 19th century machinery. although the water wheel that once drove the machinery is nowadays used only for demonstrations - modern electricity is much more reliable when there are deadlines to be met. Black ribbed silk, known as Ottoman, used for academic and legal gowns and the famous check lining used by Burberry were woven here until recently but today but it's beautiful bespoke silks in glorious colours used for theatrical costumes and exclusive interior design commissions that are the pride of the mill workers. A costume exhibition and gallery of photos shows costumes made for period dramas such as "Jefferson in Paris", "Pride and...

Oxfordshire - Riverside pleasures

by TheWanderingCamel

If there's one Thameside town that exemplifies the charm and traditions of England, it has to be Henley-on-Thames. Just 35 miles from London, it makes a great outing for a day. One of the premier events of the English summer, Henley Royal Regatta, takes over the town in early July, when for five days the town and the river are packed with spectators and competitors from all over the world. Men in blazers and boaters and women in garden party finery pour out of the trains and car parks, making their way to the official enclosures where they'll drink copious amounts of champagne and Pimms and maybe watch a race or two. Outside the enclosures, the riverbank is packed with a more casual crowd and spectators in boats of all shapes and sizes putter up and down the length of the course (1 1/4 miles, starting at Temple Island and finishing just before the bridge) on the Oxfordshire bank side of...

Oxfordshire - A royal gift

by TheWanderingCamel

Village wells are usually rustic affairs of stone and slate, but one Oxfordshire village has something far more exotic. Here the well head takes the form of a domed Indian kiosk and a golden elephant sits atop the winding mechanism. This is the Maharajah's Well at Stoke Row, high in Oxfordshire's Chiltern Hills. Before 1842, the villagers, had to walk several miles to fetch and carry water by hand as the village had no well. When told of this by the local governor (who came from Stoke Row) , and on hearing how a village boy was beaten by his mother for drinking the last of their precious water during a drought, the Maharajah of Benares decided to give the village the gift of water. He paid for a well to be sunk, a wellkeeper's cottage to be built, and a cherry orchard planted to provide the income to maintain the well. Together, the little complex served the village's water needs for...

Buckinghamshire - Gorgeous gardens

by TheWanderingCamel

Cliveden, the grand Italianate mansion built by Sir Charles Barry in 1850, high over the Thames Valley at Taplow, became American multi-millionaire William Wardolph Astor's home in 1893. and was famous as home of the smart, rich and influential "Cliveden Set" (Nancy Astor, WW's daughter-in-law - an American by birth - was the first woman elected the Westminster), High jinks of another kind earned the estate equally great notoriety in the 1960s when much of a scandal that rocked the government of the day was played out in a cottage in the grounds. Now the mansion has resumed its former grandeur, but this time in the guise of a beautiful country house hotel - pockets need to be deep to stay here. The estate is owned by the National Trust nowadays and the wonderful gardens that are Cliveden's glory are open to the public every day. The huge estate is laid out as a series of gardens each with...

The Stunning Buildings

by amandajayne81

It is probably the 'typical' English cottages that attracted me to the Cotswolds in the first place and I was not disappointed. These building were like something out of a book. Just lovely. And so many in all the towns. Being VERY untrained in all things building I can barely pick how old buildings are. I am so thankful to the councils and people who build only in styles that complement the feel of the place and leave all the awful plain boring modern buildings to countries like Australia where we know no better.

And the red post boxes!

by amandajayne81

Not sure what the interest in everything the colour red is in England (please save me from my ignorance if you know). Mind you also like the post boxes in London and the Royal Mail vans that seemed to be around everywhere we went in the UK. Liked how there was a slot for first class and second class mail but not sure if there was a difference when it came to posting overseas letters.

Love the Red Phone Boxes

by amandajayne81

Not really off the Beaten Path I know but we loved all these truly English 'things' that popped up all over the place. I guess as Aussies we are brainwashed with so many British icons from a young age (particularly when of British background) that it is cool to see them in the flesh. They are everywhere in London. These particular ones were on the banks of the Thames as we headed from Big Ben back towards the Horseguard area.

Super Squirrels

by amandajayne81

Another little animal we don't see over here but one that always cracks me up. They just go and go and go. Simply refuse to pose with me for a picture. I know they are pests to you Northern hemisphereites but believe it or not we think they are cute. This one was in London near Buckingham Palace.

The Many Churchyards

by amandajayne81

I am not a particularly religious person but I must say whilst in the UK I did enjoy wandering around the old churches and their yards. Mostly here in Australia the cemeteries are a long way from the churches and there is something relaxing and peaceful about these places. I am not sure if it is the lovely churches, the green grass, the silent residents or the neighbourhood cats scowling when we disturb their peace but it is interesting to wander for free at any time and read some of the headstones. I am pretty sure this Celtic Cross was in the Upper Slaughter St Peters Church.

Tip Photo
Many many molehills

by amandajayne81

Just as most of you non Australians view our native creatures as unusual I am madly in love with all the cute (maybe) little animals that you have in the UK. Most of them I might add are from the Wind in the Willows books. As much as I tried the closest I could get to a mole were the many molehills all over the place. Oh well maybe next visit (one of our B&B hosts did say that cats sometimes bring them in - but obviously not in great condition.)
