Have you been the hit comedy 'The Office', it is set in the wonderful oasis that is Slough...The famous poem by Betjeman asked for "come friendly bombs to fall on Slough" (or is it sluff ?). This is all you need to know about this place. There is also a line in the TV comedy "The Office" which says that Slough has two nightclubs, one of which is mentioned by Tim...TIM: New York New York, 'the club that never sleeps.' Umm, that closes at one.The BBC website is extremely funny on the topic of 'The Office' and features maps of the trading estate, roundabout and high street locations used in the hit series. The acerbic comments are superb. I've taken what I consider the best ones. The images and captions are from whoever wrote the website - I wonder if he /she might be VT member - they should be.The BBC allows reproduction of the images for personal and non-commercial use, so unless you wish to...

Thw World's most interesting roundabout...

by sourbugger

From Sourbugger's Swindon page :The local tourist board know that they are onto something of a loser when you realise that the most interesting thing in this sizeable town is a traffic intersection. It now has the official title of 'The magic roundabout' which was for many years, in a show of native wit, it's nickname - named after the children's TV show.It consists, in essence, of five mini-roundabouts set within one full size one. It actually works remarkably well.I do think however that it could be vastly improved upon by adding a character statue from the series on each of the mini-roundabouts. Dougal, Florence, Zebedee, Mr Rusty and Ermintrude would then really make it a tourist hot-spot the Tourist board could be proud of

England's most famous hangman..

by sourbugger

From Sourbugger's Horncastle (Lincolnshire) pageIf Ma killed Pa, who'd kill Pa ? .... Mar-wood. It takes a bit of thinking about that rhyme, but it refers to Horncastle's most famous celebrity - William Marwood. He lived most of his life uneventfully as a cobbler in Horncastle even if he did have some strange interests. His small shop, now a private residence has a blue plaque on it and stands in foundary lane opposite the church. In his fities, he pursuaded the governor of Lincoln prison to let him perform a hanging using his newly devised 'long drop' method, which was more humane. Instead of strangulating them as before - and thus all seeing the 'dancing man' in the gallows, the longer drop meant that unconsciousness was instantaneous, death following after a couple of minutes. He was soon in demand, travelling all over Britain and Ireland as the official executioner. He was so proud...

Englands Churches

by mauritsh

Today’s church is the fourth to have stood on this site. The first building was begun in the 7th century when Saint Wilfrid built one of England’s first stone churches here. Devastated by the king in AD 948 as a warning to the Archbishop of York, only the crypt of Wilfrid’s original church survived.Today this rests complete beneath the grandeur of Archbishop Roger de Pont l’Evêque’s 12th century minster. A second church – was built and then destroyed in 1069 at the hands of William the Conqueror. Thomas of Bayeux, first Norman Archbishop of York, then instigated the construction of a third, traces of which were incorporated into the later chapter house of Roger’s minster. The west front was added in 1220, its twin towers originally crowned with wooden spires and lead. Major rebuilding had to be postponed due to the outbreak of the War of the Roses but commenced after the accession of...

Near Malham just east of Settle june 2005

by mauritsh

This is Malham Cove, in the Yorkshire Dales National park in England. The cove is a huge natural ampitheatre of sheer limestone cliffs - up to 300m wide and 80m in height. The cove was formed during previous ice ages, when the ice caps on the hills above melted, causing a huge waterfall which eroded back the rocks. Nowadays the valley above the cove is dry, as the small remaining rivers have found a way down through a series of undiscovered caverns within the limestone. The river Aire (the main river of Leeds) has its origins at the bottom of the cove, where it bubbles up from an underwater stream. The famous limestone pavement can be found on the top of the cove.

Visiting Fountains Abbey

by mauritsh

Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire is a Cistercian monastery first founded A.D. 1132. The Abbey was in operation until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539, ordered by Henry VIII, after which the Abbey buildings were sold by the Crown to Sir Richard Gresham, the London merchant, father of the founder of the Royal Exchange.Though the buildings are now partly ruined, it is one of the largest and best preserved Cistercian houses in England and is a UNESCO World heritage site. It is now owned by the National Trust.

Ribblehead Viaduct

by mauritsh

The Viaduct has 24 arches crossing Batty Moss 100 feet below and is 440 yards long.It is part of the Settle to Carlilse railway.Construction of the line began in 1869 and lasted for seven years with about 6,000 men working on the line - the last main line railway in England constructed almost entirely by hand. Memorials along the line, especially that at Chapel-le-Dale, near Ribblehead, commemorate the lives of some of the men who died building the line. Many died through outbreaks of smallpox, as well as those injured or killed during construction.

For Pub lovers a Must see place !!!

by mauritsh

Tan Hill Inn the highest located pub in England, at 1732 ft. ASL. Lies just south of motorway A66. One of Englands more dangerous roads. In the North Yorkshire Pennine Moors embedded in between Stonesdale Moor and Arkengarthdale Moor. This remote spot is a very special place for a pub. Stunning views. When going there watch for crossing sheep, out in the open all year long. Especially in springtime.Unfortunally we couldn't drink there because we were driving, but coffee was no problem. Will go back with a driver soon and stay there long enough to enjoy to the fullest.

See the Festival of Corpus Christi in Arundel

by no1birdlady

We were told about the Festival of Corpus Christi and the Carpet of Flowers by a local man. The carpet was at Arundel Cathedral near Arundel Castle. Corpus Christi is the Latin for "Body of Christ" coming from the Last Supper. The festival started in 1264 with a procession. It was an ancient custom to strew flowers in the path of important persons as a sign of reverence and respect. So over the years it became a practice to make a carpet of flowers for the procession to walk on. The patterns became more and more intricate. It's not know when they started laying the carpet in the church but they do know it was done in 1919 and has continued to this day. Parishioners take flowers and lay them out on the central floor to form a pattern. This year it was spelling out some of the miracles of Jesus. When you look at it up close, you can see the individual flowers. It's quite amazing. We were...

Visit the Water Meadow in Woodstock

by no1birdlady

We were staying in the town of Woodstock at the Vickars Hotel. After we checked in, we walked down to the River Glyme where there is a nice area set aside called the Woodstock Water meadow; River Glyme Natural Area. We took the steps down to it from the bridge over the major road into town. There was a trail that follows the river. It's a beautiful lush natural area. Birds we saw here included Blue Tit, Great Tit, Blackbird, Com. Moorhen, Wood Pigeon, Chaffinch, Mallards, Ring-necked Pheasants, Wrens, Magpie, C. Swifts, House Martins, Jackdaw, Sedge Warbler and lots of Mute Swans. The highlight for me was seeing a nest with a Mute Swan on it protecting her 5 downy little babies and the male swan swimming back and forth in front to protect them. Male swans can be quite fierce. Flowers are beautiful here too: yellow buttercups, Queen Anne's Lace and taller Meadow Parsnip, yellow iris,...
