This is a lovely time of year in the countryside. The corn fields are at their best, as in a week or two they will be harvested and the landscrape will change again. Walking is the best way to see the area.Along the many footpaths kept open for us all to enjoy.

I am the only gay in the village

by sourbugger

The tiny Welsh village of Llanddewi Brefi (it exists on VT, but no tips yet) shot to fame in 2004, when it featured in the hit BBC sketch show 'Little Britan'.Matt Lucas portays an outrageously dressed homosexual, Daffyd, who is shocked to find anything gay or lesbian around apart from his good self - hence the catchphrase - 'Nooo, I am he only gay in the village'. The joke is of course that the remote Welsh village would be seen as parochial and conservative when in the series it is portrayed as having a wild gay scene (much to the disgust of Daffyd), with an impossibly camp verger of the local church and his live-in lover : the Vicar.Rather oddly, in Jan 2005, it was reported by the Times that the place in real life has a nearby lesbian commune and was also the location of one of the biggest LSD raids in the UK!

Ghost stations on the tube in London

by sourbugger

There are about 40 stations in total that have been 'abandoned' over the years. Many closed due lines being amalgamated from rival lines (which is why there is no longer a British Museum stop), or due to lack of use (e.g York Road) or due to the cost of refurbishment (e.g Aldwych). As a tourist, this is of little concern but you may spot the 'ghost' station at the British Museum, (Central line when travelling from Tot. Court Road to Holborn on the right hand side) or see buildings that used to be tube stops - such as the 'Strand' station at Aldwych. There are also some quite complex theories about 'missing stations' such as may lurk underneath Buckingham Place, the BBC or the MI6 headquarters. The one used in the Bond Film 'Die another day', when Bond gets his invisible Aston Martin is in fact just a studio mock up, but plenty of other films have spent time in the disused Aldwych Branch...

Experience the Sikh religion

by sourbugger

The Sikh community in Peterborough has taken over the old nightclub on Boongate as it's new Gurdwara. It is somewhat ironic that a club (trust me I know) where all sorts of immoral happenings went on is now a spiritually calming place of worship where drink, drugs and tobacco are banned. The mirrors over the walls remain, and the basic layout where the dancefloor and DJ sets were still remain. It has however been transformed into a very peaceful & soothing place of worship where the Holy book (the Guru Granth sahib) can be read. The Sikhs are a wonderfully hospitable people and from Friday to Sunday they will virtually force you to have a meal in the communal Langar (dining area). The veg. thali that was served was one of the best Indian meals I have ever had.Feel free to ring up, or just turn up - you will find it a very fulfilling experience. The address is :Singh Sabha...

Lyme Regis - meet the ancestors

by aaaarrgh

On the south coast of the county of Dorset, about 25 miles west of Weymouth, is the pretty seaside town of Lyme Regis. You will find some beautiful cliffs and beaches here. But what makes Lyme Regis special is that it is now a World Heritage Site. Vast quantities of fossils have been discovered in the cliffs. And continue to be discovered.Because of the geology of the area, rocks dating back to the Jurassic period, 200million years old, are exposed at Lyme Regis. Apparently Springtime is best to come and find lots of fresh fossils on the beach. Every winter the storms wash more objects out of the rock. Watch for bellemnites (very common, pencil-like sea creatures) and ammonites (like coiled squid) amongst the pebbles. Kids seem to love this sort of thing, we could hardly drag my neice of the beach :-)The earliest collectors found complete skeletons of prehistoric fish and reptiles. If you...

St. James Church at Avebury

by ElaineCatherine

In the village of Avebury, there is a small church that dates from Norman times. When I visited it was raining so heavily and we found the church was open so initially, it made a good momentary escape from the rain. But once inside it was clear that the church was something that was really worth seeing. It was tiny and very intimate. And it was filled with intricate and beautiful stonework. There were grave stones set into the walls and floor. My favorite was one that said (In Latin, luckily my friend reads Latin) "Death is not the End". That phrase really struck and moved me.. and Ill never forget that cold rainy day and the little church in Avebury. It was truly a special day.

Chalk it up for England

by american_tourister

Somerset and much of Southern England is made up of chalk with a very thin layer of topsoil above it. It makes for a very interesting sight when they remove it or dig any depth. This is an example. The soil has been removed so that a parking lot may be built. You can clearly see the white chalk underneath.

Lancashire has a lot offer for all

by webwanda

Lancashire historically has a lot to offer all travellers. $ hours from Heathrow if the motorway isnt congested, is a dream. Lots of old relics and burting with history whether it be fact or fiction. The night life is abundant and there is much to offer for all ages. The abbey at Whalley is a must see especially for those interested in the fall of catholicism and witches.

Clublife

by webwanda

we were in a small town in Lancashire called Hurstgreen I think that is right if not i apologise to all the people who live there. We went to this little club and had one of the best nights of my life. The band was a duo who were very talented and for a small club the place really came alive. Im still in shock to think that a club of that size could provide the entertainment that they did
