Know about this?
Maud-Lynn not Mag-da-lin
Oxford has some intuition-defying pronunciations. If you really want to sound like a native you'll have to say Bay-lee-ill for Balliol (college), Bod-lee-inn for Bodleian (library), Maud-Lynn for Magdalen (College & Street), Wuuster for Worcester (College).
Getting the word right
Some may snigger if you are too literal & get it wrong, but Oxford boasts a Magdalene Road, a Magdalene Street, a Magdalene college & a magdalene bridge.
They are all pronounced Maudlin, and we appreciate anyone taking the trouble to get the name right here.
Strange pronunciations etc.
Magdalen is pronounced 'maudlin' (honest!).
The River Cherwell is pronounced 'Charwell'.
The River Thames is also known as the Isis.
Call High Street, Broad Street & Turl Street (but no others) 'The High', 'The Broad' & 'The Turl' & you'll really blend in with the locals.
