Centrally in the Covered Market is a very unique tourist draw that happens to be a bakery. My eyes were entanced looking through the window of culinary delight. Themed cakes- from wedding to birthday and from a Harry Potter to about any dreamed up whimiscal are made with impressive artistry. My nose was alll a twitter as well. The Cake Shop is beyond a bakery- equally an artist studio of sorts. Shoppers can also pick up baking acessories for their own needs at home. Since 1986, the bakery has been in the historic Covered market centre of town. On the shop website, orders can be made. Expect to pay a minimum of 39 pounds for a small (6") cake. However, I noticed slightly more affordable occasional cakes at the store.

The Alice in Wonderland Shop was the Victorian sweet shop visited by Alice Liddell, the prototype for the character of Alice in Lewis Carroll's books. Shown in 'Through the Looking Glass', the shop now offers a wide range of Alice in Wonderland gifts. Personally, I preferred the gallery where you can find books on the subject, original prints and illustrations etc. But, if you are travelling with children, they will probably love the shop, which is full of all kinds of curiosities. It might even encourage them to read the two books, if they don't know them yet.
When you get tired of browsing through the stocks, take a rest in the tearoom, which is now closed for the winter though. Perhaps just as well as this place is said locally to be very expensive - only for tourists.

In Sir John Tenniel’s original illustrations everything is mirror-image reversed, as it would be through a looking glass.

The shop has existed since the 1830s, in a 500 year old building.
It became Alice’s Shop, an Alice themed gift store, in 1965.

This shop seels University and College souvenirs. They accept both Dollars and Yen - giving a clue to where their biggest customer base lies.
