The 'white sports shoes' myth.

by leics

I know people are often told that white trainers (sports shoes) are a no-no in the UK, that they will give you away as an overseas tourist immediately. This is absolute rubbish. White trainers are seen everywhere in the UK and are worn by all age groups.But:1. Never wear them with anything other than jeans, shorts or casual trousers. That really does mark you out as either a) old or b) a tourist.2. Never wear completely white ones..sparkling white. Get them a bit grubby before you leave. Grubby is fine and absolutely normal. Sparkling white is not.3. Those with bits of other colours are better than pure white. 4. I'm not into brands, but there are many who are. Branded might be considered better than unbranded. The main point is not the colour of the shoe but what you wear it with. See the photos....taken at random over a 10-minute period in London. But, really, no-one in England (or the...

Safety for Valuables

by Susumarie

In place of a regular purse, I adopted a "safe bag". This is a large handbag with slashproof shoulder strap, reinforced side and bottom panels, tamper-proof zippers and an anti-grab shoulder strap that can be clipped to secure fixtures when you're stationary. The inside had good organizing pockets for passports and cameras, and there is even an outside pocket perfect for a water bottle that REALLY was a lifesaver. My daughter made fun of me to begin with, but very quickly began to depend on me and my safety purse. This came from Magellans Travel supplies, item #LB379

Pack for all four seasons!

by leics

Accept that the UK has unpredictable weather and pack clothes which you wear in layers. That way, you won't get caught out when the temparature suddenly plummets or (occasionally) soars! Waterproofs are vital whenever you visit, of course. What to wear in summer? Look here! You can buy most toiletries easily, at chemists or supermarkets, so there's no need to carry extra supplies. Memory cards are easy to find in electrical/photography shops and larger supermarkets. Buy films from chemists and some newsagents, but they are much cheaper from supermarkets, who also sell discounted packs of 3 or more. Supermarkets are also cheaper for toiletries and basic medicines (e.g. paracetamol, cough medicine etc). Make sure your tent is fully waterproof......and that your sleeping bag is a warm one! The major supermarkets ... Tesco, Sainsbury's, Safeway, Asda, Morrisons........have their own...

A Brolly Good Idea

by St_Vincent

Just like everyone advises to pack comfortable walking shoes for Vegas or a mosquito net for the tropics most people will also tell you to pack and umbrella when travelling to England. Whilst, given our uncertain climate, that is fairly good advice you are probably better off saving the space in your luggage for an extra bottle of duty free and buying one here if you need one. You can buy basic folding umbrellas at most airports and train/bus stations fairly cheaply although such is our desire to get every penny we can out of the poor tourist they will usually be more expensive than those in high street stores. Of course the basic rules of supply and demand apply when buying umbrellas, if it’s raining the price goes up (unlike the umbrella usually). If you go to one of the “Everything’s a Pound” or bargain shops (in effect they are just cheap tat shops) you can get one very cheap...

Pack for all weather...

by random_person

Pack for all weather seriously...I went camping in the middle of June... In the morning it was SO cold.. Windy.. and almost frosty .. and then by the afternoon we were at the beach playing in the sea and actually got sunburnt!! because of the heat. It can differ throughout a day so much. So pack some warm items.. like a coat or a warm jumper - even in the summer. Oh and ALWAYS bring an umbrella... Yes the saying is true.. :)

Keeping Kids Happy and Together

by drjudi

I got each of the kids a new backpack they could carry on and made sure they were supplied with their Gameboys, with a new game each, snack containers that could be replenished, water and a book. Each child checked a suitcase with wheels, that way everyone could handle their own luggage. Finally, I tied a red ribbon on each bag so they could be easily identified in the baggage claim. That way everyone was kept happy and organized through out the trip. Layer for varying weather conditions: t-shirts, jeans, longsleave shirts and sweaters. Make sure everyone has shoes that fit. Kids out grow shoes quickly. Got kids? Bring wipes. I also got antibacterial gel for those times when a sink is not available. Make sure that each child has their own supply of these items, as well as toothbrush and paste, lip balm sunsceen. In addition, I carried spray on sunscreen, pain releaver, any medication...

BYOC

If you are a smoker, I would highly suggest bringing a few packs with you from home. We like to smoke when we drink so we brought some cigarettes from the states, but we ran out at the end of the trip and had to buy cigarettes there.... $12 a pack!!!!!!! Yikes!

You should have been here LAST week--just lovely!

by LBKesner

My first trip to England showed me the value of my one carry-on suitcase rule. Bring one carry-on, mix and match clothing, and a bottle of Travel Wash. You'll be happy you did when you're walking around London with your luggage or trying to manage your bags as you get on and off a bus or a train. Bring an umbrella or rain jacket. It WILL rain. Bring twice the film you think you'll use.

Bring a converter for electrical items.

by uberteacher

I just pack a lot of black or dark interchangeable clothing which I roll and cram into one rolling bag. Bring some sort of jacket that can repel water and wind plus keep out the damp. Even in the summer, it can get chilly (compared to Texas anyway). The usual. Just remember that you need a converter for hairdryers and other electrical items. Definitely bring a video camera. The water pressure sux.

Q:  How much would a taxi from Hastings or Ebbsfleet to Southampton be, and how long would it take respectively?

A: Hastings>Southampton is nearly 100 miles and would take around 2 hours. Ebbsfleet would take much the same. A taxi will be (very) expensive, I fear. You would need to...
