THE OLD ORIGINAL BAKEWELL PUDDING SHOP: FANCY A TART?

by DAO

OK, OK! It’s a pudding! If you cannot get to Bakewell, let Bakewell come to you. Please read on. This is a nice little shop that also serves as a tea room and gift shop. You can select from a huge variety of cakes and puddings, not just the famous ones. They also have gourmet coffees, teas, chocolates and other goodies. Throw in a few handicrafts and you have a place worth having a peek at. They also ship famous Bakewell Puddings – worldwide. If you don’t believe me, go to the town Post Office at 5 o’clock! Their website listed below has more information, prices and availability.Bon Appétit!

MAROUCH: Live English and eat Lebanese

by elraad

I f you wanted to imagine you were in Beirut, while you are in London, you could stop by this place few times a day, easy_midmornings, for a piece of baklawa (Lebanese delicious sweets) and a thimbleful of turkish coffee, lunch for a kebab and a bottle of a Lebanese beer, late afternoons for a bowl of dense lentil soup. At dinner, it's splendid, wild-thyme-dusted version of the toasted-bread salad fattouch, unsurpassed makanek sausages dressed with lemon and oil, the fine hummus with pine nuts, the grilled quail, and the complicated Lebanese desserts. The best thing you can get at MAROUCH, is a Lebanese mezza with machawi.Mezza, is a combination of several kind of plates: Hummus; Mouajjanet; Fattouch or Taboule; frensh fries; asbe naye; teble... that you surely eat with special and delicious Lebanese bread.Machawi, is a combination of grilled Meet; Kebab; Mekanek; Kafta; Taouk.

The Grenadier: Great Historic Bar

by shelincognito

Used as a mess for the Duke of Wellington's Grenadier Guards, this historic bar is full of memorabilia and serves traditional British cuisine. It is tucked behind a row of mews off a little side street and can be hard to find if you don’t know what you are looking for. However, the find is well worth the try. Very quaint with a personable staff that makes you feel as though you're a regular who will tell you that the bar is made of pewter and is one of the oldest in existence. A great place to meet with friends and impress them with your knowledge of little out of the way spots. Make reservations if you intend to dine, as the restaurant in the back only seats 20 or so. The Shepherds Pie was enormous and for only 10.50 BSP, well worth it! It could feed two people easily. It was a warm day, so I ordered a Pimm's and found it to hit the right spot.

Nice place close to Tower Bridge. They have a 3 course lunch with many choices for 8.95 pounds!! There was too much food!! We could not eat dessert which was included but we tasted. The restaurant is located at the St. Katherine Docks.

Petrus: The tasting menu is divine

by NedHopkins

The decor is elegant and subdued. Located in a hotel, The Berkeley, the restaurant is an easy walk from the Knighsbridge underground station (though we took a taxi back to our Mayfair hotel). The service is impeccable: responsive without being intrusive.Named for the extensive selection of Chateau Petrus wines it stocks, the restaurant is part of the culinary empire of Gordon Ramsay, England's most famous (and controversial) chef. Ramsay was at the restaurant the night we dined there, leaving shortly after 8:00.Petrus carries one star in the 2006 Michelin; it's a good bet to earn one and two more in coming years. Each dish was remarkable; overall the food was superior to what I've had in three-star Michelin restaurants in France. The tasting menu -- available only for everyone at the table -- is a superb repast at £80 (about US$115) per person. The courses (in October 2006):1. Amuse...

Kiku: Superb Japanese food

by NedHopkins

Located in Mayfair, Kiku (chrysanthemum) "is a branch of the Mikuniya Onsen (hot spring) Inn in Kinosaki in Hyogo prefecture."Kiku offers some of the best Japanese food I've eaten in a dozen countries -- including Japan. The sushi is as fresh as can be, with just a touch of wasabi between fish and rice. Other dishes are equally well prepared.Kiku has three drawbacks:1. Its decor is unpleasant. Lighting is blindingly bright and tables and chairs are more Scandinavian-modern than Japanese. (There's no tatami room.)2. It is the only Japanese restaurant in which I have eaten that serves sushi by the piece -- that is, an order is one piece, not two (nigirizushi).3. Service is slow, sometimes very slow. The shabu-shabu, my favorite meal, was outstanding. Unlike most restaurants, it is available for just one person. The beef was sliced as thinly as it should be and there was plenty of it; all...

Glastonbury, town centre - and other places, too: Pub signs

by smoox

What I love outside and inside the pubs are the signs. Often, the daily menu is chalked on the board - sometimes with some comments by the host. This one gave some information on the draught beers - and at the bottom you can read the lines:"If you cannot keep your children under control please feel free to ask a member of the staff for help. They will happily nail them to a table for you." Thanks, guys, for the offer!

Tip Photo
A pub with no beer? Impossible

by smoox

I hardly ever have food in a restaurant when traveling through England. Pubs offer a fine selection of foods - no gourmet foods, of course, but lovely local cuisine and also international delicacies. PLUS the beer. Avoid the well-known brands, go for the local beer. Draft. No bottles. That is not stylish.
