Charity Shops: Charity Shops

by brummielaura

Charity shops are very popular in the UK, and they seem to be ubiquitous. In fact, people sometimes joke that if a shop closes down on the High Street, you can expect a charity shop to take over the premises.People basically donate clothes, books etc to charity shops, which then sell these on. The money is used to support charitable projects. The shops are often run by volunteers. Some stores also sell fairtrade products such as chocolate, or other 'new' items such as Christmas cards.Examples of charity shops are: Oxfam (arguably the most famous), Cancer Research UK, Barnado's, Age Concern, ... Look for good quality second-hand clothes - you might be able to find a real bargain. Personally, I often buy books from charity shops. You could strike some real bargains here - great if you are on a budget!

Any Large Supermarket: International Groceries

by brummielaura

I've found that English supermarkets are great for stocking food from all over the world, reflecting the origins of the country's population. In most decent-sized supermarkets you can find a wide range of Asian food (from India/Pakistan/Bangladesh), food from the West Indies, kosher food, Polish food, etc etc.I love looking at the colourful tins, strange spices, and exotic fruit and veg!

Lush!: 'Fresh Handmade Cosmetics' - Made With Love

by mollymoo0oo0

Lush! shops are to be found all across the UK... and you will always know when you're near, thanks to the amaZing powerful aromas emminating from their wonderful, beautiful, handmade cosmetics and wonders for bathtime pampering :)The company started some years ago, originally called 'Cosmetics To Go', since changing it's name thanks to a competition entry by one of their many fans.. They offer a fantastic mail order service, which is also available to overseas aficionados - see the website for more info.Unlike the Body Shop, Lush! remains wholeheartedly against animal testing on all their products, their shops, staff and regular magazine are user-inspired and full of fun - if you subscribe to their emails you may even get an invite to a special in-store event on occasion - where you will see just what I mean! Whatever you like for yourself or a lovely unusual gift for a friend. There's...

Montezumas: wonderful chocolate - available to order online!!

by mollymoo0oo0

With a name created from a Spanglish word - MonteZumas - being a form of the Aztec Emperor Motecuhzoma Xocoyotzin (Motecuhzoma II) (boss of the Aztecs, lover of chocolate)... in my opinion this company has absolutely blown away any of its chocolate-making competitors in the UK...For one thing, they make outstanding chilli chocolate. If you are a fellow chocolate lover, perhaps having seen the 2000 film Chocolat, you will appreciate that this is indeed a bit special. And that's not all they do!! Check out their website for plenty more delights... wonderful gift ideas or simply naughty pleasures to be shared!!I've not yet had been lucky enough to visit their shop... they seem to be opening some more (currently open in Windsor, Newbury, Brighton, Chichester, London, Winchester & Lichfield. See the website for info) ...but if I'm ever nearby I'll definitely go :) Some of their chocolate bars...

Charity shops

by leics

Charity shops (?thrift shops) are everywhere in England, Scotland and Wales (probably Northern Ireland too). It works like this: people give their unwanted clothes and goods to the charity, then the clothes/goods are re-sold.It's a brilliant system; clothes and goods get recycled, the charity makes money and people can buy very reasonably-priced items they might otherwise not be able to afford.I buy lots of my clothes from charity shops. If you're lucky, you'll find designer-label stuff, but there's a huge amount of good quality, hardly-worn clothing in all charity shops. There's no stigma attached to such purchases at all nowadays. In fact, the larger charities have 'specialist' shops in some towns/cities for vintage/designer clothing, or for books/CDs.There are clothes for men, women and children, shoes, books, bags, curtains, ornaments, CDs, toys, games ..even furniture and electrical...

Car Boot Sales & Antique Fairs

by St_Vincent

The English are a nation of collectors and hoarders. On a Sunday morning when most respectable people should be in quiet contemplation at their place of worship you’ll find thousands of us at the numerous car boot sales (think of a mass garage sale), flea markets and antique fairs that appear all around the country. People will jostle and fight with their neighbours for the chance to buy assorted rubbish that they have no real need for just because they think it is a bargain. Strange people with heavily laden carrier bags will be eying up yet another brass candlestick that has been turned into a lamp as if it were a Louis XV crystal chandelier. Car boot sales will usually be held outside and the largest ones will find hundreds of sellers turn up and pay a fee to park in a field and set out their stall at an unearthly time of the morning when even the birds haven’t yet stirred from their...

Birmingham Bullring: Looking hot!

by amandakilgour

There are various shops at the Bullring providing clothes, cds, books, dvds and home furnishings. High fashion shops and affordable shops are also available. Lots of cafes are available when you feel the urge for a drink and a bite to eat. Buy high fashion or search for the bargains.

various: Gold, silver and bling

by sourbugger

Birmingham's Jewellery quarter used to employ up to 60,000 craftsmen at its height. It's now only a few thousand, but tucked away in this area of the city you can still find individuals who will build just about anything you want in the Jewellery line. The shops are centred around the Chamberlain clocktower on Warstone road and spread out over about half a mile or so. Most of the shop only date from the 1970's and are therefore not exactly architectural gems themselves. The gems themselves are of course the draw - the standard of diamonds that you can purchase here, after a bit of shopping around, often equate to about half the purchase price in a high-street Jeweller. They also tend to have good after-sales service with regular cleaning and insurance certificates thrown in with the deal. If you are not looking to actually purchase any Jewellery then there is little to see apart from a very...

Nigel Gibson interiors: Interior design in Stamford, Lincs

by sourbugger

Name of Shop: Nigel Gibson interiorsPacked full of imported continental furnishings and furniture, this shop is a well established estabishment in Stamford. You will find the new owner 'Neil' hidden amongst the mainly Italian lamps, tables and sofas. He never changed the name of the shop from it's previous owners, so he often answers to 'Nigel' for the sake of convenience. One feature of the shop is quite unique (well i've never seen it elsewhere). neil lives above the shop, and the first floor of his flat is a 'showflat' that he uses for everyday living, but during shop opening hours you can wander around it. Everything is still for sale here, although slightly 'secondhand'.I would dread doing that with my house. You would have to be so careful about leaving out old coffee cups, or half-eaten kebabs after a good night out. Perhaps a copy of 'Rubber, whip and donkey' Monthly left down the...
