Jim Garraghy's fudge Kitchen: Jim says "We make the best fudge in the world"

by sourbugger

If you have a sweet tooth, then it is difficult to argue with the advertising. I am writing this whilst nibbling on a piece of fudge from the aforementioned shop infused with Whiskey. At nearly four pounds for a modest sized piece, it must be considered in the same way as Caviar or Parma ham - if you want quality you will have to pay for it. Quality costs - but by God, when those taste buds start dancing you would happily pay twice the asking price. several varieties - see their website about 14 pound for 4 slices

Clarks: Shoes

by Gili_S

I must say that I was actually shocked with the collection and prices of Clarks here. In Finland they are expensive and I never find what I want, and here, I could buy ten pairs and pay the price of 3 in Finland. So, in short, buy your shoes in England, you will get a good deal. Shoes Half price what you use to pay in your own country for such quality.

Metrocentre, Newcastle upon Tyne.: Airport Terminal or just plain terminal ?

by sourbugger

Just don't mention the shoesFrom Sourbugger's Newcastle Upon Tyne Page on the Metrocentre - an enormous shopping centre:The reason why men will always be superior to women : because whatever a woman is concentrating on part of her brain will be wired up to thinking about shoes (sorry for the sexism, but it is a good joke)I have long suspected that it is only Edwinadolly and Bernishand who ever read shopping tips here on VT.....Just to annoy them, I will not point out where the shoe shops are. (not that they could read a map anyway)This massive shopping centre was the largest in Europe when it was built, and probably still is. This at least means that there is a good variety of shops. There are also real pubs which men can seek refuge or sanctuary in. In addition the 'Metroland' theme park (indoors) means that younger kids can be occupied for a while on a collection of fairground...

The Mailbox in Birmingham: An outpost of the south ?

by sourbugger

From Sourbugger's Birmingham page :In its' quest to become a modern, trendy city the mailbox is an attempt to create an upmarket shopping area. It claims that the the shopping centre / hotel / restaurant / parking / chewing gum holder development is the, and I quote, 'biggest mixed use development in the U.K'. That is as maybe, but it also means that in the quest to 'cutting edge' the place suffers from the worst examples of 'developer speak'.I'll try and translate a little for you :1) This unique development offers a truly integrated lifestyle choice for the first time in the city's history. It brings together designer fashion and lifestyle shops, luxury apartments, two hotels, secure 24 hour parking and an array of restaurants and café bars. All in an exclusive waterside setting only two or three minutes walk from New Street station.Means : We got anybody we could to be tennant, but we...

Farm gate sales

by leics

Keep your eyes open as you travel around the UK. An increasing number of farmers sell their produce either at the farm gate, or in their own farm shops. You might find fruit, vegetables, meat or cheeses and all will be excellent quality (much fresher than in the shops).Be careful with strawberries though ....the people you see sitting under umbrellas at the side of main roads are probably not selling local strawberries but ones they've bought from wholesalers (they may even be imported). Farmers' markets (selling local farm produce) are also becoming increasingly popular and are well worth seeking out. Ours sells ostrich burgers and venison as well as other meat, pies, cakes, eggs, fruit and vegetables.

Supermarkets.: Buying films.

by leics

You can buy films in lots of shops........chemists, newsagents etc...... but it's cheaper to go to a supermarket if you can. They have packs of 3 or more films for much less than you would pay in an ordinary shop. For example, 3 Agfa 200 films for around £4.50 in Asda at the moment.

Charity shops: Cheap clothes and books!

by Rosie-o

I have always been an op-shop frequenter. I know almost all the St. Vinnies shops in Melbourne and find it very relaxing rifling through old records and tacky crockery!I found the UK was an untouched haven for any op-shopper. 'Charity shops' as they are called in England, seem to be looked down on by many people who see them as only for the very poor. Unlike Australia, where op shops have often been ransacked by bargain hunters like myself or professional 'retro' shop owners, British shops are full of kitsch ornaments, good clothes and cheap books.Whilst living in the UK I bought a pair of fantastic 'New Look' flared jeans for 7 GBP, a number of tacky records and children's annuals, countless items of British royals memorabilia and a Postman Pat doona cover which I sewed into a top. I also sewed a pair of trousers and a skirt from a Top Cat doona set!So, if you're on a budget, check out...

Open air markets: Cheap fruit and veggies

by Rosie-o

Fruits such as berries and apples are common and very tasty in the UK. On the downside, mangoes, avocadoes etc all have to be imported from North Africa and Spain, so have a tendency to be a little on the small and unripe side! The best (and cheapest) place to buy fruit and veggies is at markets, most towns have them on the High Street on set days of the week. In London, Spitalfields and Portobello Road are great for produce - even things like dates and shallots. The only thing I found hard to come by was a pumpkin! They don't eat them in the UK apparently! I eventually found one at a West Indian green grocers.

Tesco and Asda: Cheap Supermarket Food

by Rosie-o

This is not really for tourists - more for the lucky folk who move to the UK and find it a little hard to make ends meet! Tesco and Asda's generic brand food are good value for money. 17p for spaghetti - you can't go wrong! Each wednesday, Tesco does a new round of special prices, so pick up a catalogue. Tesco brand cheese, milk and bread is also quite good for the individual on a budget!Tescos (and also Safeway) sell alcohol pretty cheaply, you can get Perri for 99p, it tastes kind of awful though. There are often deals on alcopops, for example 5 Archers or Reefs for 5 GBP - this is very cheap especiallay compared with pub and club prices!
