Harrods: Harrods

by kathycollins

Who hasn't heard of Harrods????Its a fun, quirky kind of place. Not really the kind of shopping I usually do while travelling, but how can you resist stepping in???? I picked up several free samples at the cosmetics section...the girl handing them out gave me several kinds of creams and lotions...I guess my skin looked a bit dry???Came in handy to have those nice little packets!

Charity shops - make lovely bargains

by Phillylawyer_19107

Check out the charity shops! I never thought of buying 2nd hand clothes until I discovered the charity shops in England. There is of course, lots of non-desirable stuff there, but you can make real finds, I got a basically new Laura-Ashley dress and an elegant silk dress here. Just make sure you go to the shops in affluent areas as you are more likely to find some really good clothing here. One charity shop saleslady told us that many of the ladies in those areas buy expensive dresses, wear them once or twice and then give them to the charity shop. Prices are more than reasonable, where else can you get a basically new silk dress for 5 Pounds? 2nd hand clothes, but also old books, toys and basically everything. Not very much. I don't think I saw anything that cost more than 15 pounds.

Buy old books in Winchester

by Phillylawyer_19107

Winchester has a shopping street which is nice, but nothing out of the ordinary. For the lover of old books though, Winchester has plenty to offer. I asked for shops with old books at the tourist information and got some good addresses which are not on the main shopping street but rather in side streets about 5 – 10 minutes walking distance. It is worth going there, the shops have a large selection of books of all ages, different subjects and mainly fair prices. So do some research on the internet beforehand or do like I did and just ask at the tourist information. From a few pounds to basically as much as you own...

The Bear Factory: A teddy bear just like you like it

by sabsi

The Bear Factory is a chain of shops where you can create your own furry friend. You can choose an animal, give him a voice (even your own one) and choose the stuff it's filled with. After they stitch it for you and you get a birth certificate you choose an outfit for your friend. Obviously in times of war combat gear was very popular :(. I would have chosen an irish rugby shirt or a 70s style fur jacket though! Bears, Lambs, Rabbits, Dogs, Hippos, Cats, Monkeys etc Around £15.

Schuh: My favourite shoe shop

by sabsi

"Schuh" (which is the German word for shoe!) has always been my favourite shoe shop chain. Haven't been in one in ages but I guess it would still be a dangerous place for me and my wallet. I discovered this shop more than 10 years ago in Scotland when I couldn't stop buying shoes. I saw it again in Liverpool recently but unfortunately (luckily?) it was closed! Trendy Shoes - nice ones, sneakers, boots ... everything! Loads. Because the shoes are so nice you can't buy less than 5 pairs at the same time!

Tip Photo
Lush: My favourite :)

by sabsi

When you walk along an English street and suddenly there's this smell as if somebody near you is taking a bath: A Lush shop must be close to you! Follow the smell and you will be in my shopping paradise! Handmade natural soaps, shampoo bars, Ballistic Bath Bombs etc etc. Everything looks very nice and smells even better. Argh, I wish there was a Lush shop near where I live! A lot! Unfortunately Lush isn't exactly cheap. But as "the shampoo bars (~ £3) last longer than many relationships" (so they say!) you can find some good bargains. The bath bombs (~ £2) disappear within seconds though!

Various: High Street Shopping

by barryg23

In five years time, I'm convinced every English high street will look the same. Depressingly, it already seems headed this way. Any average sized English town will contain HMV, Virigin, Starbucks, Boots, Clinton Cards, Carphone Warehouse, Argos, etc, etc. It's nice when I return to Ireland to see shops that belong to a particular place and which have been there longer than 10 years.
