Favorite thing: Much Wenlock is the birthplace of William Penny Brookes, founding father of the Modern Olympic Games. His home is now the Lloyds bank there. It was in 1850 that the first ever Olympian Games were held in Much Wenlock and they are still held here annually in July on the Linden Fields. The games were originally designed "to promote the moral, physical and intellectual improvement of the inhabitants of the Town and neighbourhood of Wenlock". In subsequent years this concept inspired individuals & sporting organisations throughout Europe - inspiration that made a significant contribution to the re-birth of the modern Olympic Games in 1896. Visit the museum in Muh Wenlock and you can learn much more about the life and contribution of Dr William Penny Brookes and the modern Olympic history. Great pictures of the Olympics here - like the first bicycle race held in 1876 - quite a contrast to the modern bikes our great GB team were using!
There is also an Olympic Trail around the town (guides from the tourist office) which can be walked in about an hour - look out for the bronze path symbols on the pavement marking the trail.

Favorite thing: Apart from the Olympic connection Much Wenlock is a delightful village to explore with its pretty cottages, specialist boutiques and tea rooms. Quite an array of architectural styles too from the Elizabethan mansion, the alms houses, black and white "magpie" buildings and the old priory remains - more details in the must see section.
