The one thing I love about small towns are there weekly markets. In Oswestry they take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays. They have over 100 stalls inside and outside, its the largest market in the Welsh borders.
Oswestry boasts two markets - one in town at the Horse Market & Bailey Head. The other, outside town, is the Oswestry Smithfield livestock auctions. If you fancy fresh farm produce like me, and all the home-made foodstuff, try :
BAILEY HEAD CHEESE just inside the market, goats, sheep and speciality cheeses. Also cream, yoghurt, cottage cheese, and local butter.
MARTIN’S DELICATESSEN for Cold meat’s, home made quiches, bread and cakes, chutneys, pickles, mayonnaise, jams and other preserves.

Yes, hard to believe of such a small town
My favourite is The Fox on Church St (near Boot's the chemist)
An old Black and White timber building. Real ales served and they have a roasting hot fire burning in the cold months, and an even warmer welcome from the landlord.
Great pub food served lunch time and evenings, great ambiance. Occasional live music.

Oswestry Leisure Centre has two pools with no flumes, waves or rapid runs, but at least you can swim without interference!
The main pool is 25m x 10.5m and has 5 lanes in competition. The pool is heated to 28ºc (83ºf) and has a depth of 0.9m in the shallow end to 2.0m at the deep end.
The smaller pool is 10.5m x 6m and is heated to 32ºc (90ºf). The pool has a shallow water entrance and goes down to the depth of 1.0m. The learner pool is a great introduction for babies from 3 months.

This small well run restaurant serves many new Indian dishes I have not seen before.
Staff friendly and very helpful
Favorite Dish: I ordered the chicken in spinach and coriander - a mild curry dish with freshly made nan breads, my partner had the Ceylon chicken and WOW was it hot, just as he likes it. Two days later we went back and I had the best chicken balti ever anywhere!

Yes my favourite old timbered and whitewashed building, and maybe one of the oldest buildings in Oswestry.
In the cooler months the landlord has a blazing log fire burning in the bar. Sit at the long table and eat lunch in front of the fire.
The chef has a special menu on a Tuesday evening, for 25GBP a couple can have a 3 course meal.
Favorite Dish: I recommend the home made pate and the garlic mushrooms (I have never had them grilled with cheese before, but this was a pleasant surprise). I wouldnt order a steak again but the game dishes were good.
The olde worlde atmosphere and the friendlyness of the staff make this a pleasant experience.

Favorite thing: Wilfred Owen, the War poet, was born in Oswestry in 1893.
There is a memorial in Broad Walk alongside St. Oswalds Church.
His most famous poem was Dulce et Decorum Est, written in the First World War
In August 1918 he earned the Military Cross in France, before being killed in November; seven days before the end of the war.
To view some of his poems visit:

Fondest memory: Another local eccentric was 'Mad Jack' Mytton, who used to ride a bear across his dining room table. His famous cure for hiccups - setting fire to his shirt - is, believed, to still be practised in some of the more isolated parts of Shropshire. But I'm not saying where.
