The Lazy Trout on the A49: In business since 1937

by ranger49

This roadside cafe was established in 1937 and I first experienced its special qualities in 1955 when being driven by my Dad from Manchester to Cardiff. It is - to be plain speaking - a traditional transport cafe but a very good one. Since those first, usually very early morning stops for breakfast over the intervening years I and all my family have enjoyed welcome breaks there with a good cuppa and a bacon & egg sarnie. I was sad to learn, last year, that it was up for sale but delighted this week to find it back in business, under new owners who opened at the beginning of May 2009.On Bank Holiday Monday (25 May 2009) cooked meals were available in addition to full British breakfasts and sandwiches. The outdoor eating area on a lawn overlooking the road, has plenty of tables and chairs and - some new attractions - slides and other play things for younger children, and Milo, the pet...

The Riverside Inn: Great views of the River Severn

by MarvintheMartian

Lovely pub on the A458 between Cross Houses and Cressage. Not the easiest of places to find, but well worth the effort - especially on a beaufitul sunny English afternoon (yes they do exist!).Bar food is good with average prices. Resturant food very good with appropriate prices. The Riverside in is a freehouse and a 17th century coaching pub. Formerly the Cholmondely Riverside Inn. Pate was excellent!

Darcy's Cafe Bar Trattoria: Shifnal - Don't miss the flatbread

by MarvintheMartian

Darcy's actually advertise themselves as a Mediterranean restaurant, but Italian is the closest on the list!Darcy's is small and intimate. They serve excellent pasta, meat and fish dishes. The flatbreads make excellent starters and are huge!Be aware you cannot book and I haven't yet worked out which day they close - give them a call to check. If it is busy you can wait in the small bar area and have a drink - you won't wait too long, Have a flatbread with your starters.

Shifnal Balti: Shifnal - Best Indian Restaurant I know!

by MarvintheMartian

Every meal I`ve had in this place has been excellent. The owners are very friendly and will help out with any requests. Also be aware that the restuarant does not have a licence to sell alcohol but you can bring your own wine or beer. There is no fee for this. Pricewise - very good value (even better value when you take into account that you can bring your own booze!). Lamb or Chicken Biryani - excellent flavour!
