Cafe Retro: Excellent for breakfast, lunch, dinner or coffee
This place is cooler than an ice lolly factory in Greenland run by polarbears.
The atmosphere is always buzzing and you can come here any time of day for one reason or another.
Before midday they have an excellent breakfast menu. Lunchtime and afternoon the menu changes to include things like panini and in the evening the menu changes from week to week. Usually there isn't much choice in the evening, but everything they do is generally very good.
So long as things haven't changed since my last visit, Cafe Retro does not have a license to sell alcohol - so you can bring your own (and this will make your evening out much cheaper!).
UPDATE from last visit on 7th October 2006
Cafe Retro now has a license and the bring your own has long gone. In fact from what I was told the Cafe is just picking itself up again after a period of having a poor chef a few years ago. The current chef has been in place about 18 months and doing a great job! I had a three course meal for just under 20 GBP and it was excellent.
Favorite Dish: Breakfast: Eggs Benedict
Lunch: Panini with anything
Evening: Tuna steak (if available).
Anytime: Black filter coffee - very strong and they top it up for half price (or something like that).
Cafe Retro: Looks cool - food rubbish
Great location, nice atmosphere and that's where the positives end.
Plain, expensive and very unimaginative food - I had the Croque Monsieur - far too much cheese - it was a ham & cheese toasty - not very nice & also had nachos - again far too much cheese and did not give the wow factor.
My wife had the bacon & bean soup - very salty she left most behind.
Staff - we were left outside in a cold corridor for 15 minutes while waiting for a table.
Overall including drinks we spent over £25 and not impressed.
Favorite Dish: the coffee was good
