    A Bridge of Shops

by pedersdottir Updated Apr 21, 2004

Ribbon of Avon and Romanesque arches

Traffic moves slowly over Pulteney Bridge, crowded as it is with shoppers on both sides jostling for space on the pavement. As a continuation of New Bond Street, the bridge attracts shoppers and diners to the tiny retail establishments overlooking the water.

Crossing the bridge from town and heading east, the visitor soons comes to another circle of Georgian townhouses at Laura Place. The Austen family spent some time househunting here in early 1801.

    Pulteney Bridge

One of only two bridges in Europe to support shops (the other is the Ponte Vecchio in Florence), the majestic Pulteney Bridge crosses the river Avon uniting east and west Bath. The bridge was completed in 1770. Sir William Pulteney commissioned architect Robert Adam to provide a fitting approach to the Pulteney estate.

This bridge, the only one of its kind in the UK, like the Ponte Vechio in Florence, has shops built into the side of the bridge structure. it was built in 1774.

    Shopping Bridge

This bridge, which spans the River Avon, is lined with shops on either side, so that when you're actually crossing the bridge, you're not aware that you are passing over a bridge.

    Postcard from Bath

It's a bit hard not to take a picture from downstream looking towards the Pulteney Bridge. I somehow think that the little falls in front enhance it so much without one realising it.

Pulteney Bridge is one of the most beautiful buildings in Bath. It croses river Avon and it is one of only four bridges lined with shops in the world.

The view of the bridge at night is magical.

The enclosed bridge has shops and markets. Built in the 1700s, a bridge like this with shops on it is very rare today.

There are plenty of stores on the British version of the Italian icon too! We ate lunch in a Cafe Uno that had a lovely view of the bridge.

The view of Pulteney Bridge with its three classical arches spanning the width of the Avon just above Pulteney Weir is synonymous with Bath
