Nice flowers .. at a price

... but it costs £1.50 just to enter the pavilion next to the river. Nothing to do once inside and the entrance and exit is at the same point - so you have to cross the same road again...

You can take a free stroll on the opposite bank of the river.

You can take your pictures of the floweers from ouside the gates - NO PROBLEM...

Also see the free flower exibition at the Royal Crescent...

So, I lobbed up at Waterloo...

  • So, I lobbed up at Waterloo Station to get the train at around 9 a.m. At around 9.02, while the first aid man tried to revive me after my cardiac arrest when they told me the price of the ticket, someone whispered that it's cheaper after 9.30. My apoplectic state was thus revived to normalcy. Like, less than half the price. Thus revived I went on to have a marvellous day. To my eternal shame I didn't realise till a couple of years later that I'd nearly travelled clear across the country to get to Bath. Such are the joys of taking public transport, all you have to do is pay your money and look out the window.
In Australia if you went that far it's only like going a short way down the road. Distances are so short here.

    mmmmm.......green water!

  • The Roman Baths are spectacular, however I feel they are over rated! For one, most of the architecture surrounding them is not Roman at all, but georgian! Only the holes in the ground are actually roman, but they don't tell you that!
I suppose you should chech them out, but if you don't manage to, don't get too worried, you havn't missed out on anyhitng life changing. (the waters green and smells too!)

Just bear in mind that the whole thing has been orchastrated so as you think its really amazing (as with all tourist attractions) but there are some pretty amazing peices of architecture around the city that won't cost you £10 to visit. eg Royal Crescent!/ Circus!

    Roman Baths

The Roman Baths are both a must-see and a tourist trap. In my opinion the entrance price of eight pounds was too much; however, unless you are on a tight budget, I still recommend visiting them. Judging from the large crowds visiting the Baths, it's unlikely the price will be lowered any time soon.

Try first to climb the wall. The Baths are separated from York Street by an easily scalable wall and you might sneak in when no one is watching :-)

  • Bath is a beautiful city however it relies mostly on tourism for it wealth, there is very little commerce. Some of the shops, you can buy roman artifacts such as coins and rings, they are so common in the area that shops are allowed to sell them. However if you get permission to use a metal detector on the surrounding fields, you can pick up rings, brooches and coin for nothing.

Bath is one BIG tourist trap....

  • Bath is one BIG tourist trap. You can't really avoid it.But pay a visit to Victoria Park and have a Picnic, go down to the river and look at the wier. It'll always be full of tourists but a Boat trip along the river is good, or a bus tour.

Bus Tours around the town ...

  • An utter rip off and scurge in Bath, these big buses clog up the small streets and charge their passengers extortionate money to do a trip you can easily walk. Okay now some of them may tell you lots of amazing things about the places you drive by but the free walking tours are far better I think. Do the right thing :)

Do a walking tour, free Y gratias - they leave most mornings @ 10am from outside the Abbey. Check with the tourist office by the Abbey for more information.

Camera shop next to Abbey in Bath
  • By nzalexnz on November 27, 2006

  • Do not purchase disposable cameras from the Camera Shop next to the Abbey in Bath. My digital camera battery needed recharging so I had to resort to purchasing some disposable cameras from the Camera shop. It appeared to be the only one around. I innocently paid top dollar for 3 cheap and nasty little cameras that do not carry a brand name. Being in a hurry I didn't take the time to note that they were brandless but I did notice (after I had left Bath) that they had an expiry date of 12/06. Now back in NZ and have had the pics printed. They are the worst prints I have ever seen in my 30 odd years of snapping pictures. My local Print Shop said "they are absolute rubbish and whoever sold you these should give you a refund." Please can anyone give me the name of the shop so as I can make contact with them and let them know what I think of them and their cheap and nasty products. I have been totally ripped off.

Buy a postcard instead if your digital battery lets you down.

  • Prior Park is a stately home built on the southern slopes of the city. It is a lovely house, but the gardens are frankly crap! The only thing worth seeing is the pallaium bridge. I'm not saying don't go, but don't waste a day on it, nip up in the evening and watch the sun go down over the ponds!

The Paladium bridge has succombed to hundreds of years of Graffiti! Its Bath stone pillars are carved and scraped as far back as the 19th century if I remember correctly! Quite interesting peice of history.

Jane Austen Centre is not that interesting

  • The Jane Austen centre is quite small and there just isn't much to see. I was quite disappointed, actually, as was the friend I was travelling with. I asked my 19th ct lit professor what he thought about it, but he didn't like it either. So I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
