    Mainline rail services

by morgenhund Written Nov 14, 2005

Taunton station is on the main line from London-Penzance (direct services take between 1 hour 45 mins and 2 hours 15 minutes from London Paddington) as well as the Penzance-Aberdeen line (Birmingham is 2 hours away to the North, Bristol 1 hour away, Exeter about 35 minutes away and Plymouth 90 minutes away), so is well connected. The station is served by Great Western and Virgin Trains services, with there also being a large number of regional sprinter train services. Train tickets are best booked online - that way you can fine the best fare - as there is no simple fare structure. There is an information desk at the station and there are also taxis and bus stops by the station for travelling into town, with taxis from either the upside (from Exeter etc) or the downside (towards Exeter etc.) platforms.

    Berry's Coaches Taunton-London

by morgenhund Written Nov 14, 2005

If you want to get to Taunton from London and are on a budget, there are regular coach services with Berry's (a Taunton coach company). The journey time is around three hours from Hammersmith Coach Station, with two or three services daily. A return ticket can cost as little as GBP 14 (day return on Berry's) or GBP 18 (period return). This compares very favourably with the GBP50 or so you can often expect to pay to travel on the train. The buses are clean, reliable and usually pretty punctual.
