Taunton Things to Do

  • St Mary Magdalene

The Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene, set strikingly in the centre of Taunton, has been the town church since 1308 - a heritage of 700 years. Over the next two centuries it was to become the largest parish church in Somerset. Of particular note is the tower described by Simon Jenkins as "the finest in England. It makes its peace with the sky not...

  • Pleasantly sophisticated

The Sanctuary is one of Taunton's more upmarket restaurants, with an evening meal with wine likely to set you back around GBP 25-30 per person. It also has a cheaper lunch menu, and a good wine list. Fortunately its more expensive price means that this is a place for the more discerning diner, as many of Taunton's restaurants cater for the masses,...

  • You could almost be in france!

This is my favourite restaurant in Taunton. The food & wine is always excellent, and I'm sure they could charge more as I'm always surprised at how low the tab is at the end. I quite like their veal, even though it is supposed to be a cruel thing to eat, but it's very tasty.

Taunton Shopping

  • by random_person Written Dec 21, 2006

Shopping in Taunton is not bad at all, There are the many shops that people look for (such as Topshop, Virgin, etc) and a few boutiques (such as Peaches and Silver Scene), People from the surrounding towns usually go there to do their main shopping as it's the best for miles.

Plenty of places to eat, small cafes, pubs, restaurants, etc.

Marks and spencers is near the middle of town, a great place to buy food( it's not a cafe), such as baguettes, sandwiches, fruit etc although a little steep - LOVELY food!!

In the hot summer months, the town is virtually empty as most of the teens and students are at Vivary park which is very close to town, up the top of the High Street.
If you can bear shopping in the heat (it's not overly hot, but hot for us - 30c ish), then that is the best time to go shopping as barely any crowds. Most shops have AC.

Over the christmas months, there is late night shopping in which a lot of shops open up until 9pm ish, it is a great atmosphere but also usually very busy.

All in all, if you are looking for a certain thing to buy - you will most probably find it here.

    I love shopping here!!
