 | Sheffield Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 76 | | The old Turkish bath off Glossop Road has recently been renovated, and offers a truly relaxing time. Originally built in 1836 for medicinal purposes. In 1877, 2 swimming baths, a hairdressers and the Turkish bath were opened. Victorian Sheffielders embraced the concept of sophisticated cleansing! The renovation has been performed in a tasteful way, combining modern comforts without losing the traditional atmosphere or decor. There are framed prints of the plans of the old baths in the ladies changing rooms. (Don't know if there are the same in the gents :-) ) A great way to escape the pressures of modern living. On arrival, after filling out a medical card, you are shown to the changing rooms with lockers and fluffy towels , flip flops and robe. The staff were friendly, helpful and professional. You can relax in the aromasteam room with essential oils, The Hammam (soft heat) , Steam room, Sauna, the invigorating plunge pool (its freezing!!) and Ice cave (Where crushed ice is dispensed, the idea being that you exfoliate with the ice crystals!!) In between these sessions you can relax in the lounge with cold or hot drinks(included in the admission price), while flicking thro glossy mags. We enjoyed mini choc profiteroles with our hot chocolate Mmmmm! GBP15 for 3 hours of pure relaxation!! Treatments such as massage or exfoliation are extra. There's also a hairdressers and beauty salon. Check the Spa website for treatments/prices etc. Iv'e just enjoyed a pedicure- prior to my hols - bliss!! Can't wait to try other treatments Even outside on the street, the scent of Eucalyptus is evident, as I found out when I nipped along to take photos! Pedestrianised shopping area in the centre of Sheffield. Jarvis Cocker sang about meeting up in the year 2000 at the fountain....well it used to be at the top of Fargate. Here no more! With the arrival of Meadow Hell shopping centre, Fargate shops suffered, and many of the larger shops decamped to this new shopping mecca. In recent years trade has picked up, and its once again a busy arena for retail therapy. (hoorah!) Along with well known shops (Marks n Sparks, Next, Virgin, New Look, WHS, Top Shop) , 'Big Issue' Sellers, Buskers and sellers of tacky trinkets, there are fairly regular specialist markets. The European Market appears to be a twice yearly event, which is well worth a visit!! St Patricks Day becomes a week of celebrations, with a marque/beer tent to join in Irish dancing and music. Leading off Fargate are High Street , Church Street, Surrey Street, Leopold Street, Pinstone Street, Chapel Walk and Norfolk Row, which I'll hopefully cover soon! Leave a Comment Address: City CentreDirections: Opposite the Town Hall. 5 min walk from bus station. 8 min walk from train station, or catch 60 bus Bus stops on Church Street, which leads onto Fargate.

UPDATE - Closed at present for Renovation work. Built in 1971, On the site of the Adelphi Hotel which closed in 1969, The Crucible Theatre hosts many theatrical productions in its 3 sided auditorium. Many well known West End productions as well as more obscure plays, dance and music events are performed . Also known as the venue for the annual World Snooker Championships. The Crucible is a pleasant place to spend time even if not attending an event here. Restaurant, bar, cafe selling juices and soups etc, a gift shop and outside cafe for those all too rare hot sunny days! Spot the brass plaque by the glass door, that commemorates 3 major events in Sheffields sporting history, that happened on this site. 1) 1854- The proposal was announced for the construction of a cricket ground at Bramall Lane. The first match played in April 1855 was the birth of Sheffield United Cricket Club. 2) 1889 - Another proposal! - that a football club, to run along side the cricket club be formed - hence Sheffield United Football Club was formed- Hoorah! ;-) 3) 1897 - It was decided that in order to keep the Wednesday Cricket club going over the winter season, another football club should be formed in the city--Booooo! (I'll leave you to guess that teams name) ! Leave a Comment Address: Tudor Square, SheffieldPhone: 0114 2496000Directions: Off Arundel Gate, not far from bus and train station. Fairly well signposted. Number 60 bus from bus/train station stops nearby. NCP car parking nearby, disabled on street parking nearbyWebsite: sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

A theatre with character. Old fashioned and ornately decorated. The boxes always remind me of The Muppets! It is the oldest of the four theatres that inhabit Tudor Square (Sheffield has the largest theatre complex outside Londons South Bank!) It is also the only remaining example of the work of theatre designer William Sprague outside London. For decades, Sheffielders were entertained here, but gradually, the theatre fell into disrepair and for a period in the late 70's (I think) it closed. It reopened as a live music venue for a while. ( I remember the surreal experience of seeing Gary Moore performing to a packed audience of head banging rockers, in this ornate, but crumbling venue) Following a £12 million restorative face lift, in 1990, the Lyceum is now a popular theatre again, with audiences of all ages watching well known musicals, plays and dance productions. It's also possible to get married in The Lyceum or Crucible. For some reason interior photography is banned, I didn't find out until my last visit (to see Chicago), when after taking a pic, I asked permission to take another closer shot, and was told that it wasn't allowed, but when I'd visited previously (for Singalonga SoundOf Music) everyone was snapping away, in fact it was encouraged! Ah well, my illegal pic is now on view! Leave a Comment Address: Tudor Square, SheffieldPhone: 0114 2496000Directions: Next door to The Crucible Theatre. Not far from The bus and train stations.(About 5 mins uphill) The No. 60 bus from The train/bus station stops nearby Quite well signposted for drivers NCP car park reduced rates from 17.30 next to the CrucibleWebsite: sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

Now we all like something for nothing now and again, or a bargain, so here are some freebies/moneysavers.. not just for students/senior citizens/ children etc, and all legal! I'll keep adding to these tips whenever I find summat fer nowt! Market Researchers.... Usually spotted around top of Fargate, near Next. I used to avoid this group of clipboard clutching ladies, but not now. For about 10 - 30 mins of your time, answering questions about various products etc, you may be rewarded financially ( I've been given £5 - £10) or with the product they're researching (air freshener, Cheese spreads, soaps, drinks etc) On a couple of occassions, I've been offered a glass of wine, while I've been sat there! You might just get a choc bar or a pen, but its summat fer nowt! Free magazines. In many of the shops around Division Street/ West Street etc, you can pick up free entertainment/listings mags with ads/articles about places to go, things to do in Sheffield. Exposed is quite good ( not to be confused with a lad mag!) Beer Matters a CAMpaign for Real Ale (CAMRA ) mag. picked up in traditional/pubs serving Real Ale, info/ads about Real Ale pubs in and around Sheffield Free postcards- in some of the bars around Division St/ West Street...often more attractive/amusing than the regulation 'sights of Sheff'- tram/cathedral/town hall postcard. Just take one or 2 at a time tho! It's not done to be seen to be taking the p***! Leave a Comment Address: City Centre/ Ecclesall Rd/ Broomhill etcDirections: Just keep your eyes open!

This grade 1 listed building is easily identified by its 180 ft tower, topped by a further 8 ft statue of Vulcan, crafted in bronze, perched on an anvil. (a celebration of Sheffields importance in production and manufacture of metal.) This current building is the 4th town hall of Sheffield. Designed by E W Mountford, this Gothic building is worth a closer look. The entrance on Pinstone Street, has a facade with a statue of Queen Victoria, who had granted Sheffield, a City in 1893. In 1897 (Jubilee year) She opened this Town Hall. Strangely, she did so from her carriage, by pressing a switch, which enabled the heavy gates at the top of the steps to be opened electrically! (Apparently this was 'set up' as 2 men opened the doors from the inside!) The first Lord Mayor of Sheffield was the Duke of Norfolk, and his statue can be seen in the foyer. Carvings of the City's coat of Arms, and a 36' frieze showing examples of the variety of industrial and craftworks of Sheffield, are also to be spotted. The Town Hall was given a ' Wash n Brush up' a few years ago, to restore the stonework to its former glory, having been hidden under layers of grime from it's industrial past (The many buses and taxis that pass by in a continual procession, will probably cause more damage with their toxic fumes) From The Peace Gardens, the many mullioned windows and gables can be seen. Leave a Comment Address: Pinstone Street, Sheffield S1Directions: Corner of Pinstone Street/ Surrey Street. At the top end of Fargate. 3 min walk from bus/train station.

I have passed this place many times over the years and also wondered what it was like....today I took a chance with my curiosity and went in. To start with I was impressed by the small entrance fee if £1:80 Inside you go upsome stairs and to the left is the aquarium area....guess what lots of fish swimming around starring at you starring at them....it was ok and there was plenty of various fish to look at....at this stage I was still quite happy with the value for money. Next came an area called the Petriffying Well ( excuse the spelling ) ok I might be a bit thick :O) I was under the impression that this meant the well was supposed to be frightning etc etc...to my embaressment the meaning was a term used for calcium deposits if I remember correctly....I did feel a little let down with this....or was it that I just felt plain stupid :O) Further up the stairs was the hollogram area.....this hugely impressed me...I can not say enough good things about this.....if you are in the area go and see this...if you have never seen a hollogram display before it will certainly impress you. Maybe this is boys with the toys but it was mind blowing for me...especially the one at the end...if you go you will understand....if anyone knows where I can buy items like this I would love to know and hear details. Overall rating....go go go...great value for money...makes anice change. Leave a Comment Address: Main street through Matlock BathDirections: You cant miss it....only one side of the street has shops etc etc on and it has an easily seen advertisement outside. GO GO GO GO and see this :O)

Matlock Bath is a small town just outside Sheffield...it is a good town to visit if you are having a run out to Bakewell, Castleton etc etc. The town has a sea side feel to it even though it is no where near the sea. It is a haven for bikers and classic cars, in summer you will see hundreds of motorbikes parked alongside the road all shining and highly polished. There is one main street going through Matlock Bath with various shops and eating places. It is worth visiting here for three or four hours and especially if you are planning a round trip out in the Peak District. Leave a Comment Directions: A6 near Bakewell....Belper/Derby from Sheffield I recomend Chatsworth/Bakewell then Matlock Bath.....back to Castleton/Sheffield
|
Plenty of places to eat here ranging from fish and chips to pub meals to the odd restaurant or two.....the prices are ok, about average....the best place for fish and chips has to be in Castleton....just bear in mind that the opening times for the chippy in Castleton can be quite strange and might well be shut if you head there at tea time. Ok I know the photo does not relate to eating places but I didnt take any of eating places....but it all helps in you finding the hollogram show. Leave a Comment Directions: Every where...so easy to find and plenty of choices....child friendly too.

This is just a quick one out of interest...this phot is inside the aqarium....now this area is used for housing lots of large fish...you can see from the photo it was once used as a Victorian pool....the water is quite shallow and makes you wonder about when they dived in :O) below there will be a photo of what the pool looks like now.....you can see a resemblance. Leave a Comment Address: See Aqarium and hollogramDirections: Main street going through Matlock Bath
