    Nice Dome. St appaul ?

All major UK cities have seemingly sprouted a major shopping centre in the last couple of decades. With plenty of spare land available following the collapse of the industrial base of Sheffield in the 1980's, 'Meadowhall' was born. So in the post-industrail wasteland stands a shiny cathedral to avaraice. The standard two-lecel mall surrounded by car parks topped with 'Gatehouses' that were strangley reminiscent of a high security prison.

You will find, of course, all the major high street names, but it also includes an area called 'The lanes' containing some more unusual speciality shops and a rather grand food court area. It is just a pity it is filled the usual sorry selection of fast food giants pumping out their chemical infested MSG dollops of filth.

The centre itself seemed to me a little tatty and ill-kempt. Escalators that didn't work, information booths that gave the wrong information about shop opening times, fixing held together by gaffer tape and explained holes in pristine plasterboard.

The corny advertising also annoyed me : a slogan of 'Land of Shoppertunity' just fills me with dread.

Still, if you need to shop, you need to shop.

    Shopping at Meadowhall

    The Food Hall

Fairly typical large shopping centre, perhaps most useful for clothes shopping. It is known locally as "Meadow hell" and you will understand why if you choose to go on a school holiday! Avoid weekends or any holiday period and it's not too bad.

The Meadow Hall Shopping Centre - As well as the city shopping streets there is a fabulous shopping centre just a few minutes on a tram from the centre and well worth a look!
The most amazing food hall with a massive screen showing movies at certain times. Fabulous place to go at Christmas!

Visit Meadowhall - A gigantic leisure shopping centre with more than 270 shops, Meadowhall attracts 30 million visitors a year. It's probably Europe's most successful mall. Features include an 11 screen Warner Village cinema, the Oasis Mediterranean-style food court with a giant video wall, and The Lanes, an avenue of specialist and crafts shops offering visitors the chance to search for that something a little bit different, selling everything from designer fragrances, silver jewellery and harmonicas, to limited edition framed prints and furniture.
