England sporting city...Nottingham

by sourbugger

From Sourbugger's Nottingham page : Nottingham can justifiably claim to be England's sporting city. The two footbal clubs may well be struggling at the moment, but the two grounds are but a stone throw apart and you are pretty likely to be able to get a ticket during the season.Notts County is actually the oldest football club in the world, whilst Nottingham Forest had its glory days in the 1980's under Brian Clough (now then young man ..pay attention !)and when they went as far as becoming European champions. The Trent Bridge cricket ground is also of note - being often considered the finest ground in the county. It hosted the first inter-county matches way back in 1838 and it's first test match (international) in 1899. Nottinghamshire play here in the summer season and there is still at least one test match (5 days long) every year. And that is just scratching the surface : There is the...

Football

by ratherton

Football (also known as soccer) was given to the world by England in the 19th century. It is the most popular spectator sport in England with hundreds of thousands of people packing stadiums every week. The supporters of the national team have, in the past, taken the headlines for all the wrong reasons but a lot of the violence that marred the sport in the 80's has gone. Huge numbers of people still travel all over England and the world to watch the team. Tickets are always sold out for England Fans. We travel everywhere in the hope that one day, we will be World Champions again like we were in the summer day at the Empire Stadium (Wembley) way back in 1966

Porthkerris Divers

by bpwillet

Scuba diving in this area of the UK is fantastic. One of the best in the country. There are quite a few wrekcs that can be explored and the wildlife is amazing. Basking sharks frequent this area in the warmer months, and you may be lucky enough to swim with them. The Porthkerris dive shop is superb. They offer PADI continuation and certification courses and all equipment can be rented from them, including dry suits. It is all well taken care of and they are very serious about safety. They were wonderful to work with.

Croquet

by barryg23

Despite its reputation as a posh upper-class game, Croquet is quite fun to play. I've never seen it played anywhere else but England - apart from once on the lawn in Trinity College Dublin in the summer term. Strategically, croquet is similar to golf in that you must navigate a course by hitting a ball towards a target and through a small three-sided rectangle. (Ok, I'm really describing this badly!). Much of the fun comes from hitting your opponents ball away in the opposite direction. Anyway, onstead of giving a bad description of the rules, I'll give a link to a link to a useful websitehttp://www.titansports.co.uk/rules/croquet.htm

Cricket

by barryg23

Cricket is a complicated game that I've often watched but never quite understood. It involves lots of strange terms such as innings, leg-before-wicket, overs, the Ashes and runs & centuries. I have a vague knowledge of the rules, which was mostly gained from watching it from the steps of ''The Pav", Trinity's Sports Bar, during summer terms in College. It's very popular in England (in summer) and in the Commonwealth countries. I think England are doing quite badly at the moment - they seem to be permanently expecting better things.

Tennis

by barryg23

Tennis was first played in England in victorian times, though, like football and rugby, it seems to have found a more natural home abroad. Wimbledon is seen as the traditional home of tennis, and it is still the biggest and most prestigeous tournament. The Wimbledon Championships, one of the few remaining grass-court competitions, take place at the end of June/start of July every year. Be prepared to queue a long time if you want tickets for the show courts, as this is the only way to get tickets.England's players have not had a whole lot of success in recent times, and only Tim Henman has come close to winning a Grand-Slam. The last English winner of a grand slam was Virginia Wade in 1978, while the last English man to win one was Fred Perry in 1936. Despite the lack of home success, tennis is still very popular in England.

The Home of Rugby

by barryg23

Rugby is a very popular sport in England, and since the game went professional in the mid-nineties England have improved beyond all recognition. They are currently ranked number one in World Rugby though the World Cup in 2003 will be their big test. Twickenham is the home of English Rugby, and I was lucky enough to visit this magnificent stadium in February 2002. Unfortunately England were in top form that day and beat Ireland 45-11. It is very difficult to get tickets for the International games. Instead, try to go see one of the club teams in action.

Football

by barryg23

Football is the most popular sport in England and is played all over the country. The game was first played here in the 19th Century and the first ever International match took place between England & Scotland in 1882. England's traditional home ground is Wembley, though this is at present being rebuilt. The club game is also very popular and many of the clubs - such as Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Everton, Spurs, Chelsea - are known and supported world wide. Since the Premiership started in 1993, many big-name foreign players have moved in, and the Premiership is now one of the best Leagues in the World. It is difficult to get tickets for matches involving the bigger clubs though occasionally you may be lucky.
