The Crown at Stoke by Nayland

by elucas Updated Aug 25, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you like good food and wine in a sophisticated atmosphere don’t miss this. The 15th Century Crown Inn has been considerably extended to form an attractive restaurant and patio area.

The food is excellent with fresh ingredients, there is a lot of fresh fish, but also chicken, steak and vegetarian dishes. The menu includes “Catch of the Day,” the day we visited, in August 2006, there were dishes based on fresh mackerel, skate, haddock and plaice.

Food is served daily from noon until 2.30pm, Sundays, noon until 3.30pm.
Evenings: from 6pm to 9.30pm Monday to Thursday, 6pm until 10pm Friday, Saturday, and 6pm to 9pm on Sundays.

If you wish to stay overnight the Crown has 11 quiet rooms at the rear of the property which overlook open countryside.
Breakfast is served from 7.30 - 10.30am Monday - Saturday and from 8.00am until midday on Sunday. Breakfast can also be served to visitors who are not staying.

The service was good, attentive, but not intrusive and the loos were clean, nice and looked after. The overall price was quite good value for money. There is a large car park and, on a sunny day, the patio has views of unspoilt, lush, green countryside – Constable country.

Favorite Dish: The clever part of the menu was the food pairings, not only of different dishes, but the style of wine to go with the particular dish. I spotted White Burgundy, Riesling d’Alsace, Gewurztraminer, (a spicy rich wine), Muscat (dessert wine) to name but a few. I had dressed crab with garlic mayonnaise, a side salad and chips. Now these were not the usual thin packet chips, but big chunky fresh potato chips and they balanced the intense richness of the crabmeat very well.

Andrew had tagiatelle and mixed salad and to follow a generous cheese platter, complete with relish, celery and grapes. I had quite a rich tart with a flourish of Mascapone cheese topped by a strawberry. The portions were attractively presented and generous but not huge – just nice really !

We did not try the wines, but judging by the list and the pairings with food, they certainly know about good, flavoursome and quality wines. Unusually for a restaurant there is a shop in one corner where wines can be bought, either to have at the restaurant or to take away, as well as chocolate and jams etc. The wine list was very serious with lots of high quality names – I would love to go back there with money to spend !
