Chertsey war memorial

by Elodie_Caroline

I always try and take a photo of any war memorial in any town I go to or pass through. I think it's nice to pay homage to the heroic dead who fought to keep our freedom. So here is the war memprial on the main street in Chertsey.

The Royal Holloway and London College

by Elodie_Caroline

The Royal Holloway University of London is situated in Virginia Water, Surrey and was founded by two philanphropists, Elizabeth Jesse Reid and Thamas holloway.Elizabeth Reid was a pioneering social reformer and had already founded The Bedford College for women, this was in higher advancement for women in 1849.Thomas Holloway was a self made millionaire who had decided to give something back to the community. He founded The Royal Holloway college in 1879,which cost a quarter of a million punds back then. The college is gigantic as well as beautiful, no wonder, it was built, using the looks of the Chateau of Chambord in the Loire Valley region of France. The Royal college was opened by Queen Victoria in 1885.The Royal Bedford and Holloway college was inaugurated in 1985 by Queen Elizabeth the second.Taking the front picture was easy, but to take the picture from the side, I had to get my...

The Ghosts of Hampton Court

by jo104

There have been various sightings of Anne Boleyn both with and without her head. There have been accounts of sightings where Anne is carrying her own head. King Henry claimed to be the first person to see the beheaded ghost of his second wifeAnother sighting is that of Lady Jane Seymour who was bethrothed to the king within 24 hours of Queen Anne¡¦s beheading. She bore Henry his only son the future King Edward VI and died 12 days later. Her ghost has been seen roaming the clock court and in the Silver Stick Gallery wearing a white robe carrying a lit candle, possibly searching for her son. Jane Seymour was the only queen to be buried with Henry at Windsor.King Henry VIII¡¦s fifth wife Catherine Howard haunts the Long Gallery, she was arrested there in 1542 and held prisoner. She ran along the Gallery screaming for the King to save her before the guards caught her and dragged her...

Getting Ready to Tackle Downtown London

by Bwana_Brown

The plan for our second day in the London area was to head into the heart of the city to visit with a nephew and his wife who had just recently had their first child. Because they lived in a flat in Kentish Town, very close to the heart of London, I was a trifle worried about being able to find them in the warren of streets, and then what to do about parking the rental car. There were also the new rules to consider regarding the London Exclusion Zone - if you cross into a certain area of the inner city your car is photographed and you must pay a five pound entry fee by the end of the day or you will be fined. This is an effort to keep the traffic density down in the heart of London. My fondest memory is Steve helping me to plot a successful assault on the city with his London A-Z book of maps. It was also nice to absorb the information along with a Czech Budweiser Budvar premium beer...

The shrinking county

by deeper_blue

Particularly over the last 100 years, more and more places in what was Surrey have been given a London postcode, including Tooting (where I grew up). Unfortunately some haven't made the transition very well, lacking real character, for example Croydon (see my page)

The best places

Kingston, Redhill and Epsom are the best spots in Surrey for a day out. There are nice places nearby to escape from the ratrace.
