Stonehenge: Worth only a 10 minute stop

by King_Golo

Stonehenge is the most famous stone circle of the world, but rather unspectacular if you actually are there. This is first due to its size: One would think that the rocks are gigantic, but they are "only" about 3 metres high. Of course, it's an incredible achievement for the stone age people building it - but an average tree is higher. The second reason is the fence: From the outside, you can see Stonehenge only through a fence. Seeing it from a closer perspective will cost £ 7,50 per person, and even this doesn't take you into the middle of the stone circle as it is again fenced off. I suppose many people would otherwise whip out their Eddings and leave their initials. All in all, Stonehenge is worth a 10 minute stop if you're in the area. If not, you don't miss too much. After all, it looks much more impressive if you see it on some documentary on TV.

Heale Gardens

by King_Golo

The English are very fond of gardening, be it at home planting flowers in the tiny patch in front of their house or visiting one of the magnificent manor houses with their huge landscape gardens. Landscape gardens can be found nearly everywhere in South England. Some of them are widely known and tend to get crowded, others, such as Heale Gardens, do not attract that many people despite being so charming. As a matter of fact, we were the only visitors.Heale Gardens are located in the small village of Middle Woodford which is a few miles away from Stonehenge. They are fascinating, particularly in spring: daffodils, hyacinths, fritillaries, tulips and many other kinds of flowers cover the lawns, the first buds adorn the apple tree pergolas, light green fern leaves grow under massive old trees, a gurgling stream finds its way through the gardens. Heale House itself, built in the late 16th...

Cool pile of dirt!

by amandajayne81

After departing Stonehenge (but I think before we arrived at Avebury) we drove past a little hill which we pulled over and had a good look at. There was quite a detailed write up at the base and was another of this amazing spots to just enjoy for a little while. No entrance or parking fee which is great and I have attached a website that explains it a lot better than I can.

The Boston Stump - England's largest church

by aaaarrgh

...or St Botolph's Church, to give it its proper name. At 82 metres high and equally as long, St Botolph's boasts to be the largest parish church in England. It stands on the East coast of England and was built in the early 1300's (the tower in the 1400's) on the vast wealth of the wool industry. For such an early church, it is very impressive and can be seen for miles in the flat fenlands. For £2.50 (2008) you can climb the 365 steps of the 'Stump' for panoramic views over Lincolnshire. The church is packed with interesting ancient relics. Fortunately there are plenty of information boards around the building which explain in great detail about the history. The town of Boston has one or two picturesque streets and a large market place. Boston was one of the departure points for the Pilgrims to the New World. The vicar of St Botolph's, John Cotton, sailed to America in 1630 and gave the...

The Shakespeare Sites

by DueSer

Basically the entire town of Stratford-Upon-Avon could be considered a Shakespearean site but I will attempt to break it down for you.Royal Shakespeare Company performs his plays in the main theatre of the town called, appropriately enough, The Royal Shakespeare Theatre. It is closed for rennovations until 2010 but I visited in 1998 and loved it. It's an excellent size (not too big, not too small) and has a great gift shop. Until it re-opens the RSC is using other theatres in the RSC system - The Swan and the Courtyard. His birthplace - this was my personal favorite. I thought it was a very pretty house with a beautiful backyard. The fact that it was built with wood from the local forest makes it even more special. They have furnished it with Elizabethan furniture to really give a good idea of what it was like when Shakespeare was growing up there.Hall's Croft - this was home to...

Market Day in Cambridge

by 807Wheaton

Located on the Cam River, Cambridge is the seat of the University of Cambridge. The day we strolled around this important center of learning there was a market set up in town. We enjoyed seeing the mix of colleges and normal life in a British town. It was quite crowded around the market, where lots of folks were selecting fresh veggies brought in from local rural areas. The tents are covering up Great Saint Marys on the right and in the center is King's College Chapel. Interesting to us was the comment by a friend we visited. She was delighted we visited Cambridge rather than Oxford (sorry about that). Since then we have heard similar comments. I guess that's enough to urge us to go back and visit Oxford to decide for ourselves.

Attend the Medieval Festival at Warwick Castle

by no1birdlady

We visited here in June of 2001. That year, the Medieval Festival was from May 12 thru 9 Sept. The castle is a medieval fortress which looks like we think of castles looking. It was originally Norman but was rebuilt in the 14th century. The castle was filled with people in period costumes giving demonstrations of crafts and games of the period. There was a ratcatcher, a Red Knight, a jailer guarding the dungeon, strolling minstrels and a jester on stilts. Special programs were held during the day which included a bowman demonstrating his skill with the longbow, fighting knights, and a wonderful Birds of Prey show. The birds were up on the turrets of the towers and came down to the handler on the lawn then flew back to the towers. I liked the Verreauxs Eagle Owl the best but there were also several different eagles and also vultures. Death or Glory is a fantastic collection of historic...

Hadrian's Wall

by 807Wheaton

Stretching East to West, Hadrian's Wall was built 2000 years ago, just south of the Scottish Border to mark the Northernmost boundary of Roman Britain. This World Heritage Site crosses the beautiful hills of Northumberland. Today parts are still visible and can easily be visited and used as a hiking and biking area.

One of the most famous visitor attractions in the country, we only visited the garden at Hampton Court. There are beautiful roses here and there is also a maze.Henry VIII's son Edward was born here, and a few days later, Jane Seymour his mother died at Hampton Court. James I, another monarch presided over the Hampton Court Conference which resulted in the instituion of the King James Bible.
