Durham

by sabsi

Back in university days I had a seminar called "Castles, Cathedrals and Culture in Medieval Britain". It was a killer, our lecturer bored us to death with slide shows of Durham Cathedral and its perpendicular style. So when I was around the area I of course wanted to go to Durham to see the cathedral and its perpendicular style myself. Durham is a nice little town with old university buildings, an old castle and the cathedral is impressive indeed (especially the inside!).

Keswick

by sabsi

Keswick is one of the main town of England's Lake District. There's lots of outdoor shops, Sweet shops and nice pubs here and Keswick is a great base to explore the Lakes from here. There's a nice park at the lake with lots of sheep and nice views - sitting here in the evenings was one of my favourite things to do while being in England. Read more about Keswick on my Keswick page (soon).

Crown Jewels at the Tower of London

by cleocat

The Tower of London is majestic and impressive. The jewels are for sure true to their name. For winter time the ticket lines were long and the wasn't very nice. Cold and rainy. I assume during summer it would be ten times worse. The London pass came in handy here and we got through the gates quickly.

Walking Past Self guided tours

by historyguy

I was only in this great little english town for a day but the Walking Past audio tour was a great way to understand about the place. Who would have guessed that there were secret tunnels under the square (this wasn't in any of the guide books)! The tour is broken up into chapters so I took a break in one of the hunted pubs halfway round.

Offa's Dyke, the 1200 year old England border

by aaaarrgh

King Offa was a 9th century cheif of the ancient kingdom of Mercia and is credited as being the first actual King of all England. He had strong alliances and family connections with the other Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Wessex, East Anglia and Northumbria.During Offa's reign a massive ditch and earth bank, 170 miles long, was constructed along the boundary between his kingdom and unruly lands of Wales. The earth banks were 8m high and, in some places, are still impressivelly tall and steep today, 1100 years later! The route of Offa's Dyke is now a national trail through some of the most picturesque countryside in Britain. The most popular stretches of the Dyke seem to be around the town of Knighton, where there is also an Offa's Dyke Visitor Centre. The footpath is clearly signposted. The small towns along the route seem prepared for walkers, with pubs, friendly churches and accommodation...

A theme park firmly for children

by sourbugger

As 'Theme parks' go Wicksteed park, in Northamptonshire is something of an oddball. To begin with it is aimed at the younger end of the market with only a couple of rides for teenagers and above only. Secondly, it is is owned by a charitable trust rather than a mega-corporation. This stems from the founder who wanted in 1913 to create a park for the local people. The present management stick to this policy by providing a large free playground ride area open all year at the entrance to the park. Wicksteed used to also be a manufacturing company of playground equipment. They used to try out their products here. They still exist as a company but I guess it is all made in China now (much like everything else). My mother can remember from her childhood being excited by the enourmously high slides there. Nowadays, of course, such thrills can's be permitted - it's all rubber matted and...

Go to Camden

by AlettaCrofton

I read about Camden in my London travel book and decided that I would like to go and see this "bohemian" village. It was a cold, rainy day, but in spite of the weather we had a fantastic time roaming the markets and photographing all the old monuments. The Camden Lock where boats dock was an interesting place to visit too.

Visit the attractions

by AlettaCrofton

Move around the city and go and see all those attractions on your list:China Town: learn about the history of the Chinese people that settled in London.Covent Garden: walk around and drink in the atmosphere; stand still and enjoy the classical music and various forms of entertainment offered to the public. Enjoy an english scone and clotted cream at a Covent Garden restaurant.British Museum: Enter this museum free of charge and take in what it has to offer.Do visit Harrods - it's not that bad - and go for tea and scones - even if it's just for that photo!Take a trip on the Thames rivier.

Catch a day trip to Cotswolds, Winsor, Bath ...

by AlettaCrofton

A day trip can be booked from most hotels. It is so convenient to get picked up at one's hotel and dropped off at night as close as possible to one's accommodation. The buses are luxurious and the guides are knowledgeable and friendly.
