Visit Madame Tussaud

by AlettaCrofton

It was not high on our priority list of things we wanted to do, but after much encouragement from friends to pay a visit to Madame Tussaud, we went. I can highly recommend it. It was an unforgettable experience. We especially enjoyed the exit from the building - in a little train that takes one through the history of England!

Alton Towers - Arrive Early or Book Ahead

by local_guide

If you go to Alton Towers, as well as the basic price for the basic rides, you would have to pay extra for the more 'exciting' rides. Also, since these are very popular, people are given time slots and once these are all used up, you may not be able to get the rides you want. I found this out to my cost, by arriving after 11 am with my grandson. It may be a good idea to visit the website to see if you can book in advance to avoid any disappointment, or to arrive at opening time. You don't say when you intend to go, so you should know that in June many schools take their children for outings, so even though the school holidays have not started it can still be very busy.Hope you have a lovely time - and avoid any water ride if you want to stay dry!

Yorkshire & Humber Region

by Robmj

The county of Yorkshire is the largest and is divided into four parts, north, west, east and south. The city of York, famed for its historic Roman Walls and its charming medieval streets is home to the famous 'York Minster Cathedral', a fine example of medieval architecture dating back to the Roman Era which boasts one of the finest collections of stained glass in existence. Vikings also occupied this town and York has a fantastic reconstructed Viking village and museum. The Yorkshire Dales is an area of outstanding beauty, with a large part being designated as one of England and Wales' protected national parks. There are three principle dales, Swaledale, Wharfedale and Wensleydale with a number of smaller ones. One of the most beautiful areas in Wharfedale is around the village of Bolton Abbey. The ruins of Bolton priory (est 1154) are extensive and very picterisque. The North York moors...

Lancashire & the Lakes District

by Robmj

Cumbria and Lancashire counties form this region and its stunning scenery attracts around 18 million visitors annually.Carlisle in northern cumbria has a close proximity to the Scottish border and consequently it has long been a defensive site. It is the western outpost of Hadrians Wall built across northern England as the northern border for the Roman empire during its occupation of Britain. One of the regions main attractions is the area known as the Lakes District (in Cumbria) which has a large number of fells and lakes. Naturally, this area is an outdoor hikers or boaties paradise. Great bases are the little towns of Ambleside, Keswick, Windermere or Ullswater. At the southern end of the Lakes District is Coniston and the Furness Peninsula. There is some beautiful hiking up in Furness Fells and Lake Coniston is a very peaceful place.Carrying on down south you enter Lancashire and...

Thames Valley

by Robmj

Counties in the region comprise of Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.Despite its proximity to the west of London, we have not spend much time exploring this area (yet!).There are Royal connections, Windsor Castle has been a home of Kings and Queens for 900 years. Many fine stately homes have been built over the centuries, Blenheim Palace (Oxfordshire) and Hatfield House (Hertfordshire) being two splendid examples. The area has history, evidenced by the remarkable hillside carving, the White Horse of Uffington which dates from 3,000 BC. There are also some great towns, Burford in Oxfordshire is a marvellous Cotswold town and was an important staging post between London and the West country. Oxford, itself needs little introduction and contains Britains first University (1167). Its colleges are classic examples of medieval architecture. The area around...

West Midlands

by Robmj

This area comprises of the counties Cheshire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire. This is a diverse region, where the stunning Cotswold hills and villages mix with Shakespeare country in Stratford-Upon-Avon that mix with the midlands canals that mix with the old industrial heart of England in Birmingham. It is the character of the region thats draws you, the landscape is spectacular, the houses, pubs and churchs are made from timber or Cotswold stone and the small villages you find with this mix leave you with a feeling you have stepped back in time. There is so much to do and see, some highlights include: - Stratford-Upon-Avon (Shakespeare's Tudor home town) - Warwick Castle (a magnificent medieval fortress and now stately home) - Hereford (once the Saxon capital, now a beautiful rural town) - Malvern Hills - Chipping Campden (in...

Wessex

by Robmj

This predominately rural area is in south west England and is characterised by beautiful countryside, rolling hills and stunning villages. The area has a wealth of historic and architectural sights including the prehistoric stone circle of Stonehenge to the roman baths and Georgian townscape of Bath. Its counties include Wiltshire, Somerset and Dorset. Its history includes the legend of King Arthur who is thought to have led resistance to the Saxon invasion in the 6th century. However it was a Saxon, King Alfred who first united the West country in the Kingdom of Wessex. The prehistoric past of this area is best seen in the Salisbury plains in Wiltshire with Stonehenge, Old Sarum; the hilltop fort town, Silbury Hill which is Europe's largest prehistoric earthwork and Avebury where another religious stone circle surrounds the village of Avebury.Rome's influence on English history is best...

Windsor Castle

by BruceDunning

This is one of the popular attractions for the tourists coming to London, and want a side diversion for the day. The trip is nice, but may be best to get a tour ride out to the town of Windsor. It is about 30 miles west of the city. Lucky you, there is shopping for souvenirs and knick knacks in the shops there and on the grounds. The castle tour is really great in spite of a lot of people going through constantly. Maybe while there you can see the guard marching around. Get in your que and wait, please. The castle is the largest in the world sitting on 13 acres and it is nearly 1,000 years old.
