You can pay to go in (and yes, some of the money does go towards the upkeep of UK monuments) but it is badly-presented and rather tacky. The new interpretation centre will be built within the next few years and, hopefully, will be better. In the meantime, look at the stones through the fence and then go for a walk along the cursus (free), see the barrows and get a feel for the huge prehistoric 'ritual' landscape.

If you can, go to Avebury (where the stone circle is so huge the village lies inside it!), also Silbury Hill and West Kennet longbarrow. Not too far away and less crowded.

This is not what you think. It is full of amusement arcades and souvenier shops. It is almost distracting from the beauty of the cliffs.

By all means go and check it out. There are great photo opportunities to be had anywhere along the grounds. Even some that are totally made up. The sign behind me in the picture will be in a picture with you, with your name and what city you are from, for the bargain price of 30GBP.

You will need to pay for parking just to get on the grounds anyway. It is worth just strolling along the paths or the paved walkways. There are also a few good look out spots.

Many people place Stonehenge high on their list of 'to do' things in England. If they imagine that they will be alone with the mystical stones, get up close and feel their presence - then they will be somewhat disappointed.

The truth of the matter is that a main A-road runs close by (despite frequent plans to put it in a tunnel or divert it), the facilities area are a mess, you have to pay over five quid to get in and top all that you can't actually get very near the stones at all.

I understand that the stones have to be protected for future generations, but English Heritage (who run the site) have contrived to make a visit to Stonehenge an underwhelming experience in the eyes of many visitors.

    UPDATE : DEC 18 2004

Very oddly, just a couple of days after writing the above I notice a 67 million pound plan is put in place to sort out the mess. The roads put in tunnels, decent facilities and general clearing of the mess and clutter.

Come at an odd time to avoid the crowds.

Woodhenge, only 2 miles away is just as interesting and contemporary with Stonehenge. Other stone circles such as Avebury are in fact far more spectacular to visit.

Corn Circles, a message from little green men ?

A mate of mine claims (after he has drunk the equivalent in beer of the GDP of a small African state) that he was in on the start of the crop circle phenomenon. Groups of young farmers after one too many scrumpy (West country cider for the unintiated) would haul themselves out to a field and create a few circles with a bit of imagination, a plank and a rope.

Over the years this craze has grown, with increasingly more intricate designs appearing all over western England and in other countries as well, in the summer months.

Millions of webpages are devoted towards whether these are UFO landing sites or messages from a superior intelligence. If they are the latter then why are they trying to contact yokels in Dorset ? and why don't they write in English ?

Whatever their origin (and I think you can see where I stand on this one) it doesnt stop local farmers charging a few quid at the farm gate to allow intrepid UFO seekers onto their land (any connection I wonder ?)

Take it all with a pinch of salt ! or just jump the gate when nobody....

Drink lots of scrumpy - you'll see plenty of circles then !

    time.
    by sourbugger
    From Sourbugger's London Page :

If you want to look at a load of lifeless dummies, then why not visit the House of Commons ?

I fail to understand how this attraction is still at the top of many tourists "Must see" list.

I've been a couple of times (usually taking friends who have insisted) in the past few years and have been quite disappointed at having to part with nearly 20 quid to see a few waxworks. It's not even as if much humour is injected - such as with "Spitting Image" puppets that were displayed a few years back elsewhere.

The main problem is the crowds (although they must limit numbers for fire reasons) is the swarm of humanity moving through.

I believe there is a new "interactive" section which mainly involves Brittney Spear's or Kylie's cute arse rotating - this must show quite how low the level of the I.Q of the average visitor must me.

Go to Baker street tube, and join the Queue if you really have to.

Look in the section where they show how the models are made : actually quite interesting. The rows of heads labelled up here (as they are not currently on display) is also worth a look

They really rip you off in Stonehenge. I have to admit I don’t know what the admission fee was, but I think it was around 5 or 6 Pounds (forgive me if I’m wrong, fact is that it was exorbitantly high and that’s the point here). You do get an audio guide which leads you on a circle around Stonehenge. But instead of giving you real information about it, you here a lot of tales and blabbering about some myths. Hardly any real facts. And walking around the circle isn’t really that special.

You can see the circle fine when you drive past it, just find someone to drive you, so that you can concentrate on looking out of the window, drive past real slow and you have seen it. Believe me, there is no additional benefit gained by walking around it once.

Okay, I shall admit that after about a billion drinks and if you are surrounded by a mob of your BEST buddies, some theme pubs are allright. If you're a fan of cover bands and nationalistic emblems (shamrocks, maple leaves, wombats) head on down to your nearest 'O'Neills' or 'Maple Leaf'. Otherwise they are tacky and generally dull. Being an Aussie, I visited a couple of Walkabout pubs (Covent Garden, Shepherd's Bush, Sheffield and Brighton). They are all kinda sucky, unless you want a huge dose of crummy Aussie nostalgia and are keen on Fosters. Brighton was probably the nicest, as it was quiet and had less kangaroo themed junk on the walls, Sheffield featured the token coverband whilst Shepherd's Bush was characterised by a totally FERAL mass of sweaty topless Aussie men gettin' their rocks off to Cold Chisel songs.

Drink a LOT of alcohol! Also one 'upside' of the Walkabout chain is the counter meals - their chips are pretty brilliant.

Britain is full of great and UNIQUE pubs! There is usually half a dozen or more within a square kilometre so find your local and order a pint!

Canterbury Tales - not much to tell home about

  • The Canterbury Tales promise to present your Chaucer’s „Canterbury Tales“ in an amusing and lively way with recreated scenes but also with the sounds and smells of those times. What we find (for quite a hefty admission fee) are scenes with life-like dolls, quite nice, but nothing out of the ordinary. The presentation is not extremely lively, while you stand in front of one scene, the matching story is read to you and then you wander to the next scene. It gets a bit boring after a while and frankly, knowing how nicely and interestingly the English can present history, I had expected more.

    English Taps
    by sabsi
I never understood what made the English invent and use taps like they do. In quite a few places there's two taps - one for freezing cold and one for burning hot water. There is no way to open one tap and get the right water temperature to brush your teeth or wash your face. You will always end up freezing or you burn your face ;)

Mix water in the basin until you have the right temperature. A bit complicated but there's no other way!

Ehm, don't wash your hands, face, teeth isn't a good advise is it?

  • It's a nice old town on a nice bit of river, but it's just a nice old town spoiled by heaving crowds and if that playwright chappie, whasisname, on tip of my tongue, hadn't been born here it wouldn't stand out all that much!

Go to the theatre. Best Shakespeare plays to see (strictly IMHO): The Winters Tale (overall best play); Measure for Measure (my personal favourite - Joe Orton 350 years before his time); As You Like It (the one with the heroine I identify with and the best romantic comedy); Antony and Cleopatra (most poetic); Romeo and Juliet and Julius Caesar (joint most accessible)

    Lots of nearby Cotswold towns
