The Tube

by amandajayne81

After much research and advice from friends mum and I decided to use the tube to get from Heathrow to our hotel (Tottenham Court Road Station). It was surprisingly easy to use and we only transferred once. The trip from Heathrow was even above ground for a while so we saw a bit of the surrounds. Trip was pretty cheap I think about 4 pounds each for an all day all zone ticket. Be warned if you have luggage and are travelling in a biggish group move quickly! I managed to get on one train but the doors shut before mum could. Luckily she got the next train about 1 min later and we met up but could have been a bit scary. We have a good laugh now! Also we were surprised at how far underground we were when we finally were getting off. Lucky the escalators were working otherwise we would have hauled our heavy suitcases up about 5 flights! We did see some escalators that weren't working. Mind you...

Cool Black taxi cabs

by amandajayne81

Bit on the expensive side but another icon that we thought we should try. We loved sitting towards the 'boot' (back) of the car and our luggage in front of us. Very cute. Our fare from our hotel (St Giles) which was near Oxford St to the hire car place on Buckingham Palace Road was about 20 pounds.

The Red Buses - Enough Said

by amandajayne81

Everywhere in London there seemed to be streams of red double decker buses. Most are modern ones but route 9 and 15 run the occasional Heritage ones. They are worth waiting a few buses for. We loved hopping on through the back and the smaller seats. Coming from Australia these are one of those things you need to do. Also the day tickets were only 3pounds 50 and could entertain for ages. We didn't bother with a formal sightseeing tour (there were several companies that did this - one in an open top red double deckeer. These tours were closer to 20 pounds per person.) We were happy with what we saw. Don't be in a hurry mind you. We sat on Oxford St for about an hour edging along a few centimetres every minute!

Arriving on British Airways

by amandajayne81

We flew from Munich on a British Airways flight. We arrived at terminal 5 which had worried me considering how it was being reported in the news. We were really excited about flying with BA but to be honest they were nothing spectacular. Mind you maybe they are better for long haul flights. We couldn't get over the lack of Customs (coming from Australia it is a little more full on.)

Take the Tube

by Susumarie

I had never been on a subway/underground system before London, and my daughter took charge of learning the London tube, and did beautifully, I must say. And, I am sold on the system. It is definitely the way to get around, and why anyone would want to drive, I have no idea, and the few times we were on the buses completely drove me back underground. Much faster, much more entertaining... They even supply free papers, never find such in the U.S.! Riding at peak hours when it got very crowded, people were still so good to each other. Link for info on rates and map of system:http://www.thetravelinsider.info/britain/londonundergroundtickets.htm

Getting around via Bus & Train (general)

by jduck1979

England has a fairly extensive network of Bus routes & Railway lines to get you around the country, while not always perfect (compared to say Japan, Switzerland or Germany) it's still good enough to get the job done.To find out which companies operate where, check out the link below

Travelling on public transport

by toonsarah

I have written at length on my London page about how you should behave on the Tube, but here are some suggestions about accepted behaviour on public transport all over the country. If you get on a bus or a train, it is acceptable to sit down next to someone, but on inter-city trains people usually ask “Is this seat free?” before doing so, in case a travelling companion is away at the buffet or in the toilet. If you arrive at a spare double seat, you should sit next to the window and leave a spare seat for other people to use. It is considered impolite to sit in the aisle and expect fellow passengers to climb over you in order to sit down. There are priority seats on most buses and inner city underground trains. These are indicated as reserved for the elderly, the disabled, pregnant women or people travelling with very young children in their arms. It is OK to sit on these seats, but you...

Get yourself some STAR treatment

by St_Vincent

The news is not encouraging for air travellers this Summer, especially when we hear of airlines like Silverjet and Oasis Hong Kong ceasing trading and low-cost carrier Ryannair announcing it will be grounding planes as it is uneconomical to fly them, Add to this the soaring price of fuel and the covert practice of charging for extras like checked baggage, allocated seating or curled up sandwiches and we face a bit of a dilemma about who to fly with these days. Whereas previously we might have looked primarily at price, it seems that the low-cost business model may no longer be sustainable so we might perhaps be better off looking for a mid-range option. For stability and worldwide coverage my suggestion would be to look for partner airlines in the Star Alliance. There are more than 20 of them in all including giants like Lufthansa, Air New Zealand, South African Airways and Air Canada....

Public Transportwithin Cities

by brummielaura

Public transport in England is pretty good, although most people like to complain about it. If you live close to the centre of any major city, there really is no need to get a car as buses are quite frequent and can get you almost anywhere. The buses are run by private companies. Expect to pay approx. £1.50 for a single ticket. One word of advice concerning the double deckers (coming from somebody who lives in Birmingham...): you might occasionally encounter odd characters on the upper floor - at night time it might be better to stay downstairs if you are in any doubt. And another hint: In England it's customary to say 'thank you' to the driver when you leave the bus.

Gatwick Airport to London

by Geoffleong

We arrived at Gatwick airport from Madrid. At the airport, there are numerous signs advertising the Gatwick Express train service to London. (They even sell the tickets on the airplane.) We, however, opted to go with the ‘SLOW’ train, based on our daughter’s experience. It is not really a slow train as there are only 4 stops between Gatwick airport and the Victoria station in London. For an extra 1.00 GBP we get an all day pass on London’s Underground trains. For less than 8.00 GBP we got from Gatwick to London in less than half an hour. It is a very comfortable ride and it certainly is not worth paying the extra money to arrive a few minutes earlier. The Gatwick Express costs about 14GBP, and probably a more frequent that the regular train. We only had to wait 10 minutes for our train and this was not an issue.
