Driving: the best way to travel

by Robachu1

We picked up our "hire" car at Heathrow. Avis had everything ready and it went very smoothly. I had selected an automatic compact for our trip and was a bit disappointed when I saw I had received a diesel Peugeot 307. I later discovered that despite being a diesel, this was a great car. The driving feel, handling, and brakes were fantastic. It also had a great deal more power than I anticipated. The power really came in handy when we drove on the highways because everyone was flying down the road at 70 to 80mph. The really fast drivers must have been going close to 100mph because they went by my like I was standing still when in fact I was at 80+mph.We did do our best to get off the highways and travel the less congested roads. They were really beautiful and the Peugeot's handling was perfect for the twisty parts. As for navigating the English countryside and the streets of London, I...

Hop on hop off bus

by Deng249

There are several bus companies that offer the hop on hop off service around London. The one I took was the Big Bus Company. Cost only GBP20 per person for the entire day. Most hotel concierge counters sell the tickets and you can catch the bus at the nearest stop to your hotel. It's a good way of seeing London in a day. There are 3 different routes i.e. Red, Blue & Green. If you have ample time, you can take one route first, then complete the others. The Red route takes you on most of the important buildings such as the Westminster Abbey, Tower bridge, etc. The fee is also inclusive of the river cruise which is from the tower bridge back to Westminster. It also has 3 walking tours that start at different time, at different spot. The ride is very enjoyable and the tour guides are fun and friendly. If you decide to hop off and walk around a bit, you can always catch the next bus at the...

The classiest way to arrive...

by sourbugger

Now that Concorde is merely a museum piece, if you happen to have oodles of cash in the bank, or just save up for a special slurge, then there is only one way to arrive in London : on the Orient Express.Trains nowadays depart on a variety of routes, with the route from Venice being the most popular. A few trains do the 'full' route from Istanbul now that the Balkans are at least back to some sense of normaility.A ticket from Paris will set you back over 400 quid, whilst the Venice route will be around 1400 mark. It's something I would love to do, but I suspect it will remain a pipe dream unless I win the lottery.

The Eurostar from Europe....

by sourbugger

The Eurostar is obviously THE way to arrive in England from Europe. Being an Englishman, I can write that without irony – as if the UK were not part of Europe. (the same sentiment is expressed in that famous newspaper headline “Fog in Channel, Europe cut off”).A vast amount of money has been spent (only 20 years or so late) on putting a high-speed link through Kent – it opened in November 2007. It saves about 20 minutes on the journey time and means that you arrive at the recently revamped St Pancras station in North London rather than at Waterloo International in South London. I will miss the irony of all those French travellers having to reminded of their inglorious defeat in battle against the English every time they book a train to London. The great advantage of St Pancras, apart from it being a magnificent station, is that the connections for onward travel are vastly superior to...

How to Travel by Rail - choo-choo!!!

by mollymoo0oo0

The rail network in England was privatised some time ago, and as such there is no single rail company. However, there is a very useful telephone number for enquiries which is worth keeping a note of if you intend to be travelling around.I have included below the main telephone number (from within the UK) and also a number to dial from abroad. Please note if you are calling internationally, to omit the zero shown in brackets (0).

East Midlands Airport

by leics

EMA, also known as Nottingham East Midlands, is a small regional airport used by budget airlines (Easyjet, Ryanair) as well as charter and mainstream carriers. It's a nice little airport really; a few shops and a cafe or two landside, more shops/cafe/bar airside. Not too busy, not too crowded .......so staff are generally pleasant and smiley (security just as tight, however, with armed police visible as at all UK airports). There's no train service, but buses/coaches run to nearby cities such as Nottingham, Derby and Leicester where you could pick up trains for the rest of the UK.Good car parking on airport, and also nearby at Castle Donington racetrack (transfer by bus, takes about 5 minutes). Parking is cheapest booked in advance both on airport and off.

How to remember driving at the left side in UK!!

by dutchboycalledjan

There is one drawback to the lonely roads: you tend to forget they drive on the wrong side of the road (right is called right for some reason, right!). We saw a sign in Glencoe in five or six languages to remind us, even in Dutch 'rij links'.Our tip: talk out loud at every, every (!) corner: 'left turn is small turn' or 'right turn is big turn'. Keep you awake to at all these round abouts.

The British rail network

by annase

The British train network is a confusing, expensive mess. 23 train operating companies (+Eurostar) use the same network, overlapping on the same lines and utilising many of the same stations and staff. 5 new train operators are coming into effect before the end of 2007 and then there are the undergrounds, trams, and light railways. While the situation is far from straightforward, with a little research passengers can get a bargain (well almost). For example, a journey from London to Grantham costs £44 with GNER, but with Hull Trains it only costs £20.It is not that there aren't cheap rail fares available although finding them can be problematic. Follow these tips to pay less for your train fares:-Book tickets as far in advance as you can. Tickets are usually released 12 weeks before the date of travel and there are only a limited number of really cheap tickets on each service. Once they...
